SEPTA Transit Police Officers on Strike; Pickup Driver Dead in Field; Missing Uber Driver Found Dead

SEPTA Transit Police officers went on strike Wednesday afternoon, 3/6, at 3:30 p.m. after contract negotiations between the union and transit agency broke down. Fraternal Order of Transit Police Lodge 109 represents 178 SEPTA Police officers. They have been working without a contract since March 2018. The union wants higher wages for officers who they say are underpaid and understaffed. The final sticking point in negotiations relates to union members not being able to review their own body camera footage at the end of the day. SEPTA has contingency plans to keep transit safe in spite of the strike. Philadelphia Police and suburban departments will step to patrol stations and transportation hubs. SEPTA Transit Police's 49 supervisors will work extended hours and 12-hour shifts to cover patrols.

The driver of a pickup truck was found dead inside the overturned vehicle in the middle of a field near Kingsway Regional High School in New Jersey on Wednesday morning, 3/6. The accident happened around 6 a.m. off of King's Highway and US-322 in Woolwich Township, Gloucester County. Witnesses saw the truck leave the road and go into the field. They say it flipped 1.5 times. Responders found 56-year-old Douglas Smigelski of Shiloh, NJ, dead inside the car. Woolwich Township Police are investigating.

A missing Uber driver from New Jersey was found dead inside his vehicle at 30th Street Station on Tuesday, 3/5. 52-year-old James Benjamin Carter Jr. of Willingboro, NJ, was last seen leaving from his home on Monday, February 25th. Uber has a record of him dropping off a fare on the 4900 block of Spruce Street in Philadelphia on Wednesday, February 27th around 5:15 p.m. His phone was deactivated after that. Philadelphia Police found him dead inside his SUV parked outside of 30th Street Station on Tuesday afternoon. They say the death does not appear suspicious, but a cause of death has not yet been determined. They do not know how long the car was parked at the train station or how long Carter was inside. The investigation continues.
