Phillies Sign Free Agent Bryce Harper; Federal Charges For West Philly Shooter; Crash on Rt. 309

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed a record-breaking deal with free agent outfielder Bryce Harper. The deal is reportedly for 13 years, $330 million which tops the previous free agent record set by Manny Machado for 10 years, $300 million that he signed with the San Diego Padres last week. The deal is larger than the 13 year, $325 million contract extension signed by Giancarlo Stanton in 2015.

Harper's contract does not have any opt-outs and no money is deferred. There is a $20 million signing bonus, a $10 million salary this year, $26 million in each of the following nine seasons, and $22 million in each of the last three years. 26-year-old Harper has played his entire career with the Washington Nationals. He is a 6-time All-Star, NL Rookie of the Year 2012, NL MVP 2015. and Silver Slugger 2015.

This signing caps off a busy offseason for the Phillies front office. Through trades and free agency the Phillies added four more All-Stars including outfielder Andrew McCutchen (NL MVP 2013), reliever David Robertson, shortstop Jean Segura, and catcher J.T. Realmuto. A possible Opening Day lineup could look like:

U.S. Attorney William M. McSwain announced federal charges on Thursday afternoon, 2/28, against a gunman who shot a West Philadelphia store owner on May 5 last year. 29-year-old Jovaun Patterson shot and severely injured 50-year-old Mike Poeng during a robbery outside Poeng's Beer Deli at 54th and Spruce Streets using an AK-47 rifle. Patterson struck a plea deal with Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner's office for 3 1/2 to 10 years in state prison. He pled guilty on November 15th. The victim, Poeng, was in the hospital and rehab for months. He was not notified of the plea hearing or sentencing by the DA's office. The plea arrangement and sentence was deemed controversial and has been criticized as lenient. In December, Krasner did file a motion to have the sentence vacated and reconsidered by the judge. Now, Federal prosecutors are charging Patterson with Hobbs Act robbery and with carrying and using a firearm in a crime of violence. If convicted he would face a minimum of 10 years in prison.

Route 309 in Montgomery County was closed on Thursday morning, 2/28, following a multi-vehicle pileup. Icy roads and a 'flash freeze' was partly to blame for several crashes on the highway around 5 a.m. between Butler Pike and Susquehanna Road in Ambler. Around 20 vehicles were involved and 10 people were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Light snow and a wintry mix fell in the area in the overnight hours causing the road surface to freeze. There were actually multiple accidents in both directions of the highway in the same area. After a few hours the highway was reopened.
