| Truck Driver Charged in Death of Cyclist; Pizza Delivery Man Shot; No Franchise Tag for Nick Foles |

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner announced charges against a sanitation truck driver who struck and killed a cyclist in Center City in 2017. 28-year-old Jorge Fretts is charged with homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, and reckless endangerment of another person. It happened on November 28, 2017, around 7:30 a.m. at 11th Street and Spruce Street. 24-year-old Emily Fredricks was riding her bike along Spruce Street in the bike lane and collided with a private sanitation truck turning right onto 11th Street driven by Fretts. "The victim in this case was lawfully traveling in her lane of travel, which was the bike lane, and Mr. Fretts was operating a large commercial vehicle which he had been trained to operate and has been trained to understand it contains many dangers, just by the vehicle's size and dimensions," said Chief of Homicide Anthony Voci, during a press conference Wednesday, 2/27. "And in operating that vehicle, his training requires him to be extra vigilante. In this particular case we obtained video from inside the truck that indicated he was wearing ear buds in violation of Pennsylvania law, that he was looking down at paperwork in his center console, when he should've been looking in his side view mirrors.†Last year, the sanitation company, Gold Metal Environmental, settled with the Fredricks family for $6 million and made a $125,000 contribution to make roads safer for bikes.
A pizza deliveryman was shot and killed in Overbrook Park after being lured to the property for a robbery. It happened around 7 p.m. on the 7600 block of Woodcrest Avenue. 30-year-old Bobby Jenkins of Ardmore was working for Stacy's Pizza located on Haverford Ave near City Ave. When he arrived at the address to deliver the order, he was met by a gunman who shot him in the chest. Jenkins was taken to Lankenau Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Police say that the house was vacant and under construction. "The house is under construction right now," Philadelphia Police Inspector Raymond Evers said. "So we believe the individuals who did this broke in the rear of the property and staged this robbery that turned into a homicide." No arrests have been made.
The Philadelphia Eagles will not use the franchise tag on Super Bowl LVII MVP QB Nick Foles allowing him to leave as an unrestricted free agent. Earlier this month, the Eagles exercised their $20 million contract option for next year, but Foles opted to pay his $2 million buy out. The team could have placed a tag on him for $25 million and possibly trade him, but instead decided to let him go. Executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman spoke on Wednesday, 2/27, from the NFL Combine, "We made this decision as an organization and we feel very comfortable with it. Hard decision because he's someone who means a lot to us individually and personally, but we felt it was the right thing to do." He said, "We've had incredible success with him when he's had to play - four playoff wins in the last two years" "Great teammate, a huge resource for Carson and [Nate Sudfeld] as well, but at the same time he deserves an opportunity to lead a team. It's a goal of his to lead another team, to lead another locker room, and we feel at this point it's the right decision.â€
