4yo Dies After Falling on Broken Glass; NJ Bill Requires Taxes To Be On Ballot; LaSalle Doggie Dorm

A 4-year-old North Philadelphia boy's death has been ruled accidental after he fell onto a piece of broken glass in his home on Wednesday afternoon, 2/20. It happened on the 3200 block of North Reese Street. Adrian Ortega suffered a laceration to the stomach from a piece of broken glass that came out of a picture frame. His mother, Amanda Velez, was in the bathroom when she heard a bang. Her 2-year-old daughter started screaming and Adrian called out. She found him hunched over and bleeding. He was rushed to St. Christopher's Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

The Democratic-majority New Jersey Senate passed legislation on Thursday, 2/21, that would require presidential and vice presidential candidates to release five years of federal tax returns in order to appear on the state's ballot. The bill is inspired by President Donald Trump who broke with tradition and did not release his tax returns (and still hasn't) during the 2016 elections. The bill now goes to the Democratic-led Assembly for a vote. Assuming it passes there, it would reach the desk of Democratic Governor Phil Murphy. A similar measure advanced out of New Jersey Legislature before, but was vetoed by Republican Gov. Chris Christie.

Officials at La Salle University have announced plans for a dog-friendly residence hall starting in the Fall 2019. It will be the first in Philadelphia. Upperclassmen who will live in St. George Hall can apply for the dog program. There are a few qualifications and restrictions. Dogs must be approved by the University and have all shots, licenses, and IDs. Dogs must be under 30 lbs. There can only be one dog per unit and all roommates must sign off on having the dog. A full list of requirements and responsibilities is available on La Salle's website. There will also be amenities including a dog-run for exercise, on-campus washing station, and dog-friendly lounge space. This new policy allows students to bring animals on campus as pets, which is different than Emotional Support Animals or Service Dogs for students with needs. "Students enjoy having animals on campus, whether itâ€™s during our 'Pause for Paws' stress-buster event each semester or through our ongoing partnership with Purina," said Dawn Soufleris, vice president of Student Affairs. "We recognize that there are mental, physical, and emotional benefits to having a pet, and are excited to provide this option to our on-campus community."
