Howard Shultz Says Starbucks Arrests Were Racial Bias; Roxborough Thief Dead; Philly Zoo Keys Return

Former Starbucks CEO and possible 2020 independent presidential candidate Howard Shultz was in Philadelphia on Wednesday as part of his nationwide book tour. He was speaking to an audience at the Parkway Central Library at 1901 Vine Street. Shultz was questioned about the April 2018 incident that occurred in a Rittenhouse Square Starbucks where two black men were arrested while waiting for a business meeting after one of them asked for the restroom key before either had purchased anything. Shultz described the situation, "In a matter of minutes a verbal problem occurred... And she decided that she felt a threat and she called 911. And within ten minutes, six police officers showed up and immediately handcuffed these two men and arrested them." 'She' being the manager of the store.

Melissa DePino, the woman who filmed the whole incident, was present on Wednesday and confronted Shultz saying, "And very respectfully, I need to say to you, you are not describing the incident accurately. And the way you are describing it is perpetuating the problem," she said. "I know you want to be part of the solution, and I hope you will be, but when you say that there were words between the two of them and she felt threatened, that didn't happen. I saw it with my own two eyes, I was there."

Shultz then admitted, "I spent time with the manager one on one and I just asked her a simple question," Schultz said. "I asked her if those two young men were white, would she have called the police? And to her credit, she said, 'Probably not.' And so once I heard that I knew that what occurred was a form of racial profiling. And I was advised that you can't possibly say that on national TV because that's going to damage the company, the equity of the brand, you shouldn't do that. But once I knew what she said, I felt I had a moral obligation to say the truth."

A man is dead after getting into an altercation with a homeowner outside his Roxborough home early Wednesday morning, 2/13. It happened around 5:30 a.m. on the 8100 block of Ridge Avenue. The homeowner heard the 36-year-old man in his backyard near his car in the driveway and went outside. The man was either trying to steal the car or at least get inside, but a fight broke out between the two. The homeowner threw a punch and the man fell backward and hit his head on the porch. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. Neighbors who witnessed what happened say it was "an accident, it's a horrible accident" and that the homeowner was protecting himself. No charges have been filed at this time.

The Philadelphia Zoo announced on Wednesday that they will be reviving the Zoo Key program many of us grew up on. The original program started in the early 1960s and ended in the early 2000s. It will be relaunched Spring 2019 for the "Creatures of Habitat: A Gazillion Piece Animal Adventure" this April. The exhibit will feature life-size recreations of 30 animals made completely out of LEGOs placed through out the zoo. You will be able to use your key to activate audio books at each statue as well as other areas in the zoo. New keys will be available in different colors and animal shapes.
