Meek Mill, 76ers Rubin, Jay Z Start Reform Alliance; Salem Standoff Ends; Lost Gun Law Enforced

Philadelphia hip hop star Meek Mill along with Jay Z, 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin, and other sports and business leaders announced on Wednesday, 1/23, the creation of the REFORM Alliance. The organization's focus will be to reform the country's criminal justice system including probation/parole. The leaders (which also include New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft; Brooklyn Nets co-owner Clara Wu Tsai, Vista Equity Partners founder Robert F. Smith; Galaxy Digital founder Michael E. Novogratz; and Third Point LLC founder Daniel S. Loeb) have pledged $50 million. Meek Mill and Michael Rubin will co-chair. CNN Host and activist Van Jones will act as CEO. Meek Mill has a long history of probation violations stemming from a 2008 conviction on drug and gun charges. In November 2017, he was sentenced to 2-4 years for technical violations and spent several months in prison before the PA Supreme Court granted bail pending appeal. "Every time I started to further my life with the music industry, traveling the world and traveling worldwide - and actually making money to be able to provide for my family and take them out of that ruthless environment - every year there was something that brought me back to ground zero, and it was probation. I always wondered what happened to the people that was in situations worse than mine," Mill said.

A man wanted on warrants was taken into custody after an hours-long standoff in Salem, New Jersey that began with shots fired at U.S. Marshals. 26-year-old Eric Smith was eventually peacefully arrested after 3 1/2 hours. It started around 11:30 a.m. at an apartment building on the 100 block of East Broadway. The U.S. Marshals Task Force was attempting to arrest Smith on a warrant for failing to appear in court. Smith opened fire from the rooftop of the building. Law enforcement established a perimeter and took cover, schools were locked down, and the nearby Salem County Offices were also put on lock down. Some people were evacuated from the court house, but others stayed inside. Smith surrendered after talking with a negotiator for three hours. No one was injured. Additional charges have not been announced.

UPDATE: 26-year-old Eric Smith Jr. has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and weapons counts.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner announced at a press conference on Wednesday, 1/23, that the city will start enforcing a 10-year-old ordinance that requires gun owners to report lost or stolen guns. The Lost or Stolen Firearm Law was passed by City Council a decade ago but the DA's office has never enforced it. Krasner says that many legal gun owners sell their weapons illegally, and then claim they were stolen when they are used in crimes. The law says you must report the weapon stolen or missing within 24 hours. All you have to do is call 911. First offenders could face a $2,000 fine. Repeat offenders face 90 days in jail.
