Komen Race For The Cure Replaced w/ Walk; Woman Puts Dog in Oven After Big Loss; Governor Addresses

The Susan G. Komen foundation announced on Tuesday, 1/15, that it will be replacing the Race for the Cure with a new event called the More Than Pink Walk. The race tradition has been held annually on Mother's Day for 28 years. By next year, all 66 Komen affiliates will switch over to the new walk only format. The foundation says that rising expenses forced them to rethink the overall production of the fundraising event. "We saw a real need... to move away from the fun-and-festival atmosphere that attracted people who weren't necessarily motivated by the mission," said Elaine Grobman, Komen Philadelphia's chief executive officer. "As more and more people attended without registering, donating, or raising money, we had to rely more on sponsor dollars to cover the cost of accommodating and providing security for those huge crowds. So fewer dollars remained to support our mission." The walk will start at the Art Museum/Eakins Oval, go down the Parkway, around Logan Circle, and back to the Art Museum. After the Eagles loss on Sunday, 1/13, an upset female fan attacked her girlfriend and placed their dog in the microwave at a Best Western in Northampton County. 31-year-old Kirsten J. Gaskins of Philadelphia was charged with simple assault, harassment, cruelty to animals and possession of drug paraphernalia. It happened around 9:40 p.m. at the hotel at 300 Gateway Drive in Hanover Township. Following the Eagles-Saints playoff game, Gaskins allegedly became angry and got into an argument with her girlfriend. She pushed her and struck her face. Gaskins then threatened to kill the woman's dog. When the police arrived they found the white Pomeranian inside the microwave. It was not turned on. Gaskins has since been released on $20,000 unsecured bail.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf was sworn in for a second term on Tuesday, 1/15. He called on all Pennsylvanians to work together for a better future. A new lieutenant governor, John Fetterman, was also sworn in today. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy delivered his first state of the state address today. He went after the state's tax incentive programs calling them "crony capitalism." He also called for a raise in the minimum wage and the legalization of recreational marijuana.

Philadelphia Eagle head coach Doug Pederson announced during his end-of-season press conference on Tuesday, 1/15, that Carson Wentz will be the Eagles starting QB next season. That puts that debate to rest. "Carson is the quarterback going forward and in Nick's case, we would love to have everybody back throughout the roster, but it's not about one guy and we're going to do what's best for the team," said Pederson. The Eagles now have to decide what to do with Nick Foles. They have a $20 million option for him next year. He could decline the option and pay the Eagles $2 million to become a free agent. They could put a franchise tag on him for $23-25 million to definitely keep him The team has until mid-February to make a decision.
