14 Students Hurt in NJ Bus Crash; Options for Amtrak Split-Flap Board; Double-doink All Over City

A school bus and a tanker truck collided in Gloucester County on Monday afternoon, 1/7, injuring numerous children. It happened at 3:20 p.m. near the intersection of Ferrell and Monroeville roads in South Harrison Township. The bus was carrying 22 students from Gloucester County Institute of Technology (GCIT). The school bus was traveling west on Ferrell. It stopped at the stop sign before attempting to make a left hand turn. The tanker truck was traveling westbound on Monroeville Road and collided with the bus. It hit the rear driver's side section before veering off and into some trees. The truck had the right of way. The bus driver either didn't see the truck or thought it was going to stop. 14 students had to be taken to 5 different hospitals. They suffered various non life-threatening injuries, leg injures, facial lacerations, etc. The truck driver was taken to Crozer Chester Medical Center with a broken knee. The Gloucester County Haz-Mat Assessment Unit was on scene to take care of a diesel fuel leak from the tanker. South Harrison Township Police Department, New Jersey State Police and the National Transportation and Safety Board will be investigating. The bus driver will face traffic citations.

When news that Amtrak planned to scrap the iconic Solari flipping board at 30th Street Station for display screens as part of an overall redesign project broke, travelers cried foul. Many train riders and others that pass through 30th Street said they'd miss the tell tale "clickity clack" sounds of the board's flaps as it updates arrivals and departures. Pennsylvania Congressman Brendon Boyle has been meeting with Amtrak to voice the public's concerns and see if there is a compromise to just sending the Solari board off to the museum. A big reason for updating to a new system is that the current one is not ADA compliant, it can be hard to read. Boyle feels that they may have a compromise. "A sign that is ADA compliant, that connects with the existing Amtrak information system, that preserves the ambiance, the look and sound of the current sign," Boyle said. Oat Foundry, a Northeast Philadelphia engineering company, designs and builds custom split-flap displays. Their displays are build with current technology but retain the classic look and most importantly sound of the original. "It would look like this except a little bit bigger characters, because that's a big part of ADA compliance, but it would still have authentic, electro-mechanical flapping sound," Oat Foundry CEO Mark Kuhn said.

It was confirmed today by the NFL that Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Treyvon Hester got a hand on the final field goal attempt in Sunday's playoff game against the Chicago Bears. He's been credited with a block in the stat sheet. It was the first postseason blocked FG in Eagles history. The slight redirection caused Bears' kicker Cody Parkey to hit the goal post and the cross bar with no time left. The Eagles won the game 16-15 and move on to face the New Orleans Saints. Eagles fans are wasting no time in immortalizing the â€œdouble doinkâ€ by printing t-shirts and even putting up a billboard. (see photo below)
