Newborn Dead in Dumpster, 15yo Mother Arrested; Turnpike Toll Increase; 2019's First Murder

A 15-year-old girl is under arrest after her newborn son died after being discovered in a dumpster in North Philadelphia. 39th district officers were first approached by a woman around 10:30 p.m. Monday, 12/31, on the 2200 block of Lehigh Avenue. According to police, the woman said that her daughter's friend had placed her newborn in a dumpster. The woman retrieved the baby and then made contact with police. The child was taken to Temple University Hospital and pronounced dead a short time later. Police found the teenage mother at home with her mother on the 2700 block of N. Judson Street. Police believe that is where she gave birth. The two were taken to the Special Victim's Unit where the girl was placed under arrest. She was then taken to Temple University Hospital for precautionary medical treatment.

UPDATE: 15-year-old Jani Morris, of the 2200 block of Lehigh Avenue, has been charged as an adult with murder, endangering the welfare of a child, possession of an instrument of crime, and abuse of a corpse.

Tolls on the Pennsylvania Turnpike are set to increase once again come this Sunday. This will be the 11th straight year motorists will see a price hike. The increase in tolls this year will be 6%. If you travel all 359 miles across the state you will see fares go from $55 to $58.30 for cash payers and $39.25 to $41.60 for E-ZPass tag holders. State Auditor General Eugene DePasquale doesn't think raising the tolls is a good idea, it could eventually force drivers to find other routes. His office will conduct a review of turnpike finances and usage. Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission CEO Mark Compton says they haven't seen a drop in usage.

Philadelphia Police are already investigating the first murder of 2019. It happened just after midnight on Tuesday, 1/1, on the 3200 block of Tampa Street in Kensington. Police arrived to find a Hispanic male with multiple gunshot wounds to his head, face and chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene. There are no suspects or motive yet in the case. There is a $20,000 reward, as in every homicide. Anyone with information is asked to contact the homicide unit at 215-686-3334 or call 911. In 2018, there were 351 murders in the city. That is the highest since 2007.
