Foles to Start Sunday vs Bears in Wildcard; Penrose Diner Stops 24 hours; 3x Shooting Franklinville

The Philadelphia Eagles are heading to the NFL Playoffs. The Eagles beat the Washington Redskins 24-0 on Sunday and the Chicago Bears beat the Minnesota Vikings 24-10 securing Philly's wildcard berth. Philadelphia quarterback Nick Foles left the game in the fourth quarter after taking a hit from Redskins linebacker Ryan Kerrigan. Any concerns for the Super Bowl MVP's status were alleviated on Monday when Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said that Foles would start this upcoming weekend. The Eagles will face the Bears in a NFC Wild Card Game on Sunday at 4:40 p.m. On Sunday, Foles was 28 of 33 for 221 yards, two TDs and one interception. He started the game with 25 straight completions, tying an NFL record also head by Phillip Rivers ('18) and Ryan Tannehill ('15). Donovan McNabb completed 24 straight over 2 games in '04.

The Penrose Diner in South Philadelphia will no longer be open 24 hours starting New Year's Day. The new hours are 6 a.m. until midnight, seven days a week. The iconic eatery is located at the convergence of Penrose Ave, Packer Ave, 20th Street, and Moyamensing Ave. and has been serving the community for over 50 years. They say that it is becoming harder for them to staff the restaurant in the overnight shifts. They also say that younger generations aren't stopping at the diner late at night because they are using Uber and Lyft to get home and then ordering food from delivery services.

Three people are in the hospital after a shooting at a Chinese takeout restaurant in the city's Franklinville section on Sunday night, 12/30. It happened around 10:30 p.m. at the Erie Kitchen on the 600 block of W. Erie Avenue. The victims, three 19-year-old men, were involved in an argument with an unknown male inside the restaurant. The male left the store and returned short time later armed with a hand gun. He fired several shots through the front door of the restaurant. Two of the men suffered gunshot wounds to the back, abdomen, and right leg. The third man sustained a graze wound to the left side of his chest. They were all taken to Temple University Hospital. The suspect is described as a Hispanic or black male, light complexion, medium build, wearing a red and blue jacket, and armed with a handgun. No arrests have been made. Philadelphia Police have released video surveillance of the incident.

Manny Diaz has left Temple to return to Miami to become the Hurricanes' next head football coach. Diaz was Miami's defensive coordinator this season. The Temple Owls announced him as their next head coach on December 12th after hiring him to replace Geoff Collins. However, Sunday 12/29, Miami head coach Mark Richt unexpectedly announced his retirement. The Hurricanes offered Diaz the job and he accepted. "I hate the way this unfolded with respect to Temple," Diaz said. "I was given a tremendous opportunity to lead the Temple program and I was actively engaged in doing just that when I woke up this morning. I never saw this coming, no one did. I do hope that the Temple players, administration and fans appreciate the uniqueness of this situation and the overwhelming pull to stay home. Pat Kraft is a phenomenal leader and I know he will hire a great coach to move them forward."
