Two Workers Hurt in Collapse; Mayor Kenney Signs Two Worker Bills; NJ HS Wrestler Forced to Cut Hair

Two workers were rescued after a building collapsed in North Philadelphia on Friday morning, 12/21. It happened just after 11:30 a.m. on Ridge Avenue and Vineyard Street near Girard Ave. The men were in an excavation site next to a vacant building when a wall from the building came crashing down and trapped them. Fire crews were able to free the two men. They were both conscious when rescued and transported to the hospital. Licenses and Inspections were on the scene making sure other buildings were secure. The two sites were already under demolition with permits. The cause of the collapse is under investigation.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney signed two bills on Thursday, 12/20, intended to help workers. The first one, called the 21st Century Minimum Wage law, will gradually raise the minimum wage for city government workers to $15/hour. It goes into effect on July 1st, 2019. Wage hikes will occur each July 1st for the next four each until it reaches $15 in 2022. Currently, the minimum wage is $12.20/hour. The other bill, the Fair Work Week bill, is aimed at the 130,000 hourly workers in the retail, food service, and hospitality sectors. Employers must have reasonable expectations of employees' time and give them stable schedules. This includes advance notice of schedules, a pathway to access more hours of work, compensation for last-minute schedule changes, and protection from retaliation. This law goes into effect January 1st, 2020.

New Jersey officials are investigating after a black Buena Regional High School wrestler was forced to cut off his dreadlocks by a white referee or otherwise forfeit his match. It happened on Thursday, December 20th. Video of the incident has gone viral. The referee would not allow Andrew Johnson to wrestle in his match, even with a head cover on, so he chose to cut his hair as the injury clocked ticked. Johnson won the match in OT. The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association is investigating the incident. They are waiting for incident reports from the school and the referee. They have also sent initial information to the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights. NJSIAA said that there are rules on hair length and hair coverings, but they do not know yet if there was an infraction. They also said that the referee will not be scheduled while the investigation proceeds.
