Student Attacked By Teen Mob in Kensington; Mark D'Amico Faces Jail Time; Man With Sword Surrenders

A high school student was attacked by a large group of teens on his way home from school on Monday, 12/17, in Kensington. It happened around 12:45 p.m. on the 1800 block of Lippincott Street. 15-year-old George Gonzalez was on his way home from Mastbaum High School after an early dismissal when he was jumped and assaulted by a group of around two dozen teens. Surveillance video shows Gonzalez standing on the sidewalk and getting hit by one teen. He then began to run away. The rest of the group chased him down and swarmed him a half a block away. Police found him on the sidewalk knocked out with several bruises and cuts to his face and body. He was taken to St. Christopher;s Hospital. The sophomore may transfer schools instead of returning to Mastbaum after winter break. East Division Detectives are investigating the attack.

Mark D'Amico, a New Jersey man accused of running a GoFundMe scam that netted more than $400,000, may face jail time over unpaid parking tickets and related charges. A Burlington County prosecutor said on Monday, 12/17, that D'Amico faces 30 days in jail for driving without a license three times between March 2017 and May 2018. D'Amico, his former girlfriend Kate McClure, and homeless veteran Johnny Bobbitt are accused of concocting a false feel-good story and setting up a fundraiser to accept donations. They've all pled not guilty to theft and conspiracy charges.

A sword wielding man surrendered to Philadelphia Police after a four-hour long standoff in Strawberry Mansion on Monday night, 12/17. Police arrived around 8:20 p.m. on the 2400 block of North Myrtlewood Street to find a 42-year-old man reportedly high on narcotics standing outside his home. The man was swinging a 2-foot long sword. Police ordered him to drop the weapon several times but he did not comply. Police tried to taser the suspect, but he simply ripped out the wires. The man went back into his home and began to throw objects at police from the second story window. He threw a weed wacker, glass, broken furniture, an air conditioner, a broken door, etc. The man eventually surrendered around midnight and was taken into custody.
