| Port Richmond Police Involved Shooting; Bear Repellant Sickens NJ Amazon Workers; Augello Sentenced |

Philadelphia Police are investigating after an officer shot and killed a knife-wielding man in Port Richmond on Wednesday morning, 12/5. It happened around 8:45 a.m. on the 3500 block of Belgrade Street. Police were called to the scene of a large altercation on the street. When the first responding officer arrived, multiple people pointed out a man. That man fled into the nearby home of a woman who was getting her child ready for school. It was not his house, the door was just open. The officer followed the man and issued commands to show his hands, but he did not comply. The officer was holding his Taser. When the man did eventually show his hands, he was holding a knife. The officer holstered the Taser and drew his gun. The officer gave the man additional commands. "At that point, the male lunged at the officer in aggressive fashion with the knife. The officer discharged his city issued firearm one time, striking the male one time in the chest," Philadelphia Police Captain Sekou Kinebrew said. The man was taken to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The woman and child were not hurt. The Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation Unit is investigating.
Over 50 people fell ill at a Amazon fulfillment center in Mercer County, New Jersey, when a canister of bear repellent fell off a shelf and released fumes on Wednesday, 12/5. It happened at the warehouse on New Canton Way in Robbinsville just before 9 a.m. 24 people were taken to the hospital for treatment, 1 person is in critical condition. 30 more people were treated at the scene. Most complained of difficulty breathing and/or burning in their throats.
UPDATE: A robot was responsible for the accident. An automated machine punctured a hole in a 9 oz can of bear repellent, which contains extremely concentrated Capsaicin, an active ingredient in chili peppers.
"Today at our Robbinsville fulfillment center, a damaged aerosol can dispensed strong fumes in a contained area of the facility," said Rachael Lighty, Regional Manager, External Communications for Amazon Operations. "The safety of our employees is our top priority, and as such, all employees in that area have been relocated to safe place and employees experiencing symptoms are being treated onsite. As a precaution, some employees have been transported to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment. We appreciate the swift response of our local responders."
The man convicted of killing a South Jersey radio host has been sentenced to life in prison. Ferdinand Augello was found guilty in October on murder, narcotics, racketeering, and attempted murder charges. The 62-year-old was sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years. Technically, he will be eligible for parole after 55 years, but he will have to live to 117. Prosecutors say that Augello and the victim's husband, Dr. James Kauffman, had April Kauffman killed in 2012 to stop her from exposing a drug ring run by the doctor and a motorcycle gang. Dr. Kauffman was facing similar charges, but was found dead in his cell in January of an apparent suicide. Augello was also convicted of trying to have Dr. Kauffman killed while he was in jail. Augello still maintained his innocence, pointing the finger at some of the informants that testified against him in the case. |
