Kathleen Kane Appeal Rejected, Jail Next; NJ Marijuana Measure Advances; NJ Vape Shop Crackdown

Former Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane will soon be behind bars. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court declined to hear her appeal on Monday, 11/26, and the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office stated that they will file a motion on Tuesday morning to revoke her bail. Kane has been out on $75,000 bail pending appeal since her October 2016 sentencing. Kane had leaked grand jury information and then lied about it. She was convicted on two counts of felony perjury and seven misdemeanor charges, including obstruction and conspiracy. Kane was sentenced to 10 to 23 months in jail. A three-judge Superior Court panel previously upheld her conviction.

New Jersey lawmakers advanced a measure to legalize recreational marijuana. The Democrat-led joint Assembly and Senate panel spent four hours on Monday, 11/16, listening to around 90 people. If approved, the legislation would move to the floor of each chamber. A voting session is scheduled for later this month. Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy supports legalizing marijuana. The 147-page measure would legalize possession of up to 1 oz of marijuana for adults 21 and over. A five person cannabis commission will be set up. Sales will be taxed at 12 percent. The measure also calls for expedited expungements of those with marijuana-related criminal backgrounds and calls for at least 15 percent of the licenses to cannabis establishments go to "minority owned businesses." New Jersey will join 10 other states plus DC if they pass legalization.

Police in Egg Harbor Township, NJ, have cracked down on three vape shops for selling tobacco-related products to minors. Police began investigating after they received complaints from school officials and parents. The legal age in New Jersey to purchase tobacco-related products including e-cigarettes like Juul and pods that contain nicotine is 21 years. Police used summer time officers who are under the age of 21 to go in to the suspected stores and try to make a purchase. They were not carded and were able to buy the product. The Jersey Vape Shop located at 2164 Ocean Heights Avenue, the Vape and Tobacco Shop located at 6501 Delilah Road, and EHT Tobacco & Convenience located 6105 West Jersey Avenue were each issued a summons to appear in municipal court. They face a fine if convicted.
