A toddler was struck and killed by a car in the parking lot of the Haverford YMCA on Saturday afternoon, 11/17. The tragic accident happened around 12:30 p.m. on the 800 block of Eagle Road in Havertown. The 2-year-old girl got away from her mother and sat down in an empty parking spot. The driver of the car never saw the child and began to pull into the parking space. "He was pulling into the spot in front of where she was sitting and then when he pulled in the mother started screaming and he found out what happened right away," said Haverford Township Police Chief John Viola. The driver remained at the scene. The girl was taken to Lankenau Hospital but later died. The tight knit YMCA community is shaken up. Philadelphia Freedom Valley YMCA President and CEO Shaun Elliott said, "Unfortunately it's one of those accidents that really could happen anywhere and it doesn't make it any easier." Elliot also said after speaking with the father, "It's tough to look at the father who just lost a child. Our heart also goes out to the driver. When we're able to we'll reach out because that individual must feel terrible as well." The YMCA was closed the rest of the day Saturday. No charges have been filed. No names have been released.
A Haverford man was convicted on Friday, 11/16, of sexually abusing a 4-year-old boy last year. 47-year-old Michael Kaminsky, of the 300 block of Golf Hills Road, was found guilty of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, sexual assault, indecent assault, and child endangerment (see photo below). In a taped interview conducted by Delaware County Children's Advocacy Center Director Jodi Kaplan, the victim, now 5, described Kaminsky's mouth "kissing" his penis and "hugging" it. He also described Kaminsky "warming up" the victim's penis with his hand while they bathed together. Delaware County District Attorney Katayoun M. Copeland said, "The horrific actions of the defendant, Michael Kaminsky, are deplorable, abhorrent and reprehensible, as he sexually abused an innocent 4-year old child who was entrusted in his care." Bail was revoked and he was taken to George W. Hill Correctional Facility. Sentencing will be on February 12th. He will be a lifetime Megan’s Law sex offender registrant. He faces 7-40 years in prison.
Philadelphia Police are searching for two suspects who posed as PGW workers and robbed a couple in Northeast Philadelphia on Saturday, 11/17. It happened around 2:45 p.m. on the 4500 block of Higbee Street in the Wissinoming neighborhood. Two men knocked on the victim's door. One was wearing a PGW hardhat. They told the man that there was a gas leak in the area and asked to see the basement. The homeowner showed them the basement. Moments later, one of the men came back upstairs and asked the man to come downstairs so that they could show him something. The other man was waiting downstairs with a gun. They used zip ties to bind the man's hands and demanded money. Police say they told the victim they knew he had money and began to strike him asking where it was. After 25 minutes, the man's fiance came home. They grabbed her as she came in the front door, but she slipped out of her jacket and ran out the back. The men then fled. They made off with several thousand dollars and jewelry. They were possibly driving a blue Infiniti sedan with tinted windows. They are both Hispanic males. One is described as 25-35 years old, 5 feet 9 inches, 175-180 pounds, very light skinned, wearing a navy blue uniform, armed with a black semi-automatic handgun. The second suspect is described as 25-35 years old, 5 feet 9 inches, medium build, has a medium skin complexion, and was wearing a navy blue uniform. |
