A gunman opened fire in a bar in Southern California on Wednesday night, killing 12 people including a sheriff's sergeant, before turning the gun on himself. It happened around 11:15 p.m. local time at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, Ventura County, 40 miles west of Los Angeles. The bar was hosting its regular 'College Country Night' and was full of students from nearby California Lutheran University, as well as Pepperdine, Moorpark, and Cal State Channel Islands. The gunman has been identified as 28-year-old Ian David Long, a former marine and decorated combat veteran. He used a smoke bomb and was armed with a Glock 21 .45-caliber handgun equipped with an extended magazine. The gun was legally purchased in CA, but the extended magazine is illegal in the state. 54-year-old Sheriff Sgt. Ron Hellus was the first to respond to the incident. The 29-year-veteran of the force was shot several times after he entered the bar. At least 15 other people suffered injuries while trying to flee the shooter and escape the bar. Police do not yet have a motive. Long has suffered post traumatic stress related incidents in the past.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has announced details of an Independent Reconciliation and Reparations Program designed to financially compensate victims of clergy sexual abuse. Initial funding will come from existing Archdiocesan assets and ongoing funding will come from borrowing and sales of properties to be determined. The program will run independent of Archdiocese staff and leadership. Independent experts will administer the fund and determine appropriate compensations to be paid for each claim. Police are looking for three men who broke into several cars in a parking lot in the city's Spring Garden section. It happened around 5 a.m. on November 2nd on the 1900 block of Mount Vernon Street. Philadelphia Police have released surveillance video of the incident. They say two black males and an unknown third person can be seen breaking into 11 vehicles by smashing the door windows. They would then go through the vehicle and take items from inside. If you have any information about this incident, call police at 215-686-3093/3094.
