Boathouse Row Viking Thorfinn Karlsefni Toppled; Guilty Verdict Kauffman Murder; Trump in Philly

Sometime overnight Tuesday, 10/2, a several thousand pound granite and bronze statue of a Viking explorer located at the top of Boathouse Row along Kelly Drive was toppled over and into the Schuylkill River. The statue of Thorfinn Karlsefni has stood there since 1920. Karlsefni was an Icelandic explorer who followed the path of Leif Eriksson to North America in 1010 AD. Philadelphia Police are trying to determine how vandals were able to pull the 7-foot statue off it's pedestal and into the water. The city is trying to figure out how to get the statue back out of the water. "It's just troubling that people spend this much energy and time on destructive behavior like this that just ends up costing the city money," said Margo Berg with the city's Office of Arts Culture. A year ago, the statue was vandalized with spray paint and anti-Nazi messages. It has been the site of white nationalist rallies and counter-protests, including last year. Police do not yet know the motive and no arrests have been made. They are looking into surveillance footage.

UPDATE: Crews were able to use a crane to remove the statue from the river on Tuesday afternoon.

A man charged in the murder of a New Jersey radio show host was found guilty by jury on Tuesday afternoon. Ferdinand Augello was convicted in the 2012 murder of April Kauffman. The jury received the case after closing arguments were done earlier Tuesday. Prosecutors told jurors that Augello and April's husband, Dr. James Kauffman, wanted to stop her from exposing a drug ring run supposedly by the doctor and a motorcycle gang. Dr. Kauffman was also facing charges until he killed himself in custody last January.

President Donald Trump was in Philadelphia on Tuesday afternoon to address the National Electrical Contractors Association Convention at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Center City. He told attendees, "We're in the midst of a manufacturing renaissance." Trump also touted the new U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement or "USMCA." The new trade deal still must be approved by Congress. The presidential visit also brought plenty of protestors voicing their opposition to his policies in general and to the current nomination process of Judge Brett Kavanaugh. The main demonstrations were outside the Convention Center at Broad and Arch while some did march through Center City. Trump's visit also caused traffic problems as his motorcade moved through the city to and from the airport this afternoon.
