Philly Teen Stabs Classmate in School; Fmr. Mayor Goode Street, MOVE; Center City Traffic Crackdown

A 13-year-old girl was arrested after stabbing a classmate with scissors inside a Philadelphia school on Friday morning, 9/21. It happened just before 11 a.m. at the William Dick Public School on the 2400 block of North 24th Street. It happened inside a science classroom around 10:50 a.m. The girl and a 13-year-old boy got into a fight. That is when she pulled out an adult-size pair of scissors and stabbed the boy in the torso. He was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in stable condition.

A portion of North 59th Street in Overbrook was renamed "W. Wilson Goode, Sr. Way" after former Philadelphia Mayor W. Wilson Goode on Friday afternoon, 9/21. Goode was the first African American mayor of the city and was in office from 1984 - 1992. He has since become a minister and works with children with incarcerated parents. Several protestors rallied at the ceremony, including members of MOVE. Goode was mayor when the MOVE house was bombed in 1985. He said today, "I was responsible, I am going to man up," Goode said. "[But] I refuse to be defined by one day in my life."

Philadelphia city officials announced a new plan to tackle traffic congestion in Center City, particularly during rush hour. Starting Monday and running until Thanksgiving, officers will be strictly enforcing all illegal movements. That includes double parking, blocking the box, no stopping/standing, and driving/stopping in the bus lane. Philadelphia police, the Philadelphia Parking Authority, and SEPTA police officers will focus on Market from 13th to 7th Streets and Chestnut from 22nd down to 10th Streets. "We have all seen it, backups happen when people double park â€“ the dreaded double park â€“ stop at a bus lane and make other illegal movements," said Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney. "When all of us who share these streets do our part and follow the rules, we keep things moving," said SEPTA general manager Jeffrey Knueppel. "And, yes, that includes us." "The goal is to change the culture in Center City - the traffic culture, the driving culture," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Melvin Singleton.
