No Money Left in Homeless Man's GoFundMe; Philly Cop Charged w/ Murder; AOPS High School Contract

According to an attorney for a homeless Philadelphia man who played the part of the Good Samaritan last fall, there is no money left from a GoFundMe account that raised over $400,000. Johnny Bobbitt used his last $20 to buy gas for Kate McClure who was stranded on I-95 last fall. McClure and boyfriend Mark D'Amico set up the fundraiser for the selfless veteran to help thank him and get him off the streets. The couple promised a home, cars, and the security of managed trust funds. When the money stopped coming his way, Bobbitt grew wary when he saw the couple posting pictures from lavish vacations on Facebook. They said they didn't want him spending money on drugs. The couple claimed they gave over $200,000 to Bobbitt. He estimates it was more like $75,000. Last Thursday, a New Jersey judge stepped in and ordered the couple, who had never set up a trust and were holding the money in their own account, to turnover the remaining funds to a frozen escrow account. No money was deposited over the long Labor Day weekend. Attorney Chris Fallon who represents Bobbitt said he learned on a Tuesday morning conference call that the money is all gone, according to the attorney for Kate McClure and Mark D'Amico. An accounting of all the money is due on September 10th. 14,000 people donated to this campaign, which is covered by the GoFundMe Guarantee. There will be a hearing on the matter on Wednesday at 10 am.

A former Philadelphia Police officer has been charged with murder in the shooting death of a suspect following a traffic stop in North Philadelphia last year. Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner announced that Ryan Pownall has been charged with first-degree criminal homicide, possession of an instrument of crime, and recklessly endangering another person. On June 8, 2017, Pownall stopped David Jones for riding a dirt bike near the 4200 block of Whitaker Avenue in Hunting Park. Pownall felt a gun in Jones' waist band and a struggle ensued. Pownall tried to shoot the suspect but his gun jammed. Jones then threw his weapon away and ran in the opposite direction. Pownall then shot three more times towards the suspect and traffic. He hit Jones in the back twice as the suspect was running away unarmed. The grand jury used video evidence and more to determine that there was no reason Pownell should have reasonably believed that Jones was still armed and dangerous or a threat. Pownall was dismissed from the police force last year for multiple infractions from this incident including making a traffic stop while transporting witnesses and failing to notify dispatch of the traffic stop. He turned himself in this morning.

The Secondary School System of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the Association of Catholic School Teachers, Local 1776 (ACT) reached an agreement today on a new two year contract. School will start as scheduled on Wednesday for 11,000 students in 17 high schools. The previous contract expired last week and both sides negotiated over the Labor Day weekend.
