Local Track Star Shot in West Oak Lane; Cheltenham Walmart Suspect ID'd; Devil's Pool Closed on Wkds

Philadelphia Police are investigating after a local track star was shot and killed in the West Oak Lane section of Philadelphia on Monday night, 8/13. It happened around 9:40 p.m. on the 1800 Block of East Pastorius Street. 18-year-old Kristian Marche was found in a driveway with a gunshot to the head. He was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center. He died from his injuries Tuesday night, 8/14. Marche graduated Imhotep Charter High School this year and was going to start at Penn State this week on a track and field scholarship. Police do not have a motive or suspects at this time. They ask anyone with information to come forward and contact police. Sandy Barbour, Penn State Director of Athletics, released the following statement: "Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Kristian Marche's family, friends and teammates. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy; another young person taken from his loved ones far too early. Our thoughts are with Kristian's family and friends; we will do what we can to support them and our track and field students and staff during this very difficult time."

The suspect taken into custody after the shooting at a Walmart store in Cheltenham, Montgomery County, on Tuesday has been identified as 30-year-old Keenan Jones of Philadelphia. Jones appeared before a judge for his arraignment via video link on Wednesday, 8/15. He is charged with Criminal Attempt-Murder, Aggravated Assault, Reckless Endangering Another Person, Resisting Arrest, Possessing Instruments of Crime and Persons Not to Possess Firearms. He is being held on $1 million cash bail. The incident began as a dispute in a check out line. Jones pulled a gun from his sister's waistband and began shooting. Five people were struck by gunfire, but everyone survived. Jones and his sister then fled in a car, disposing of the gun out the window. They crashed into the back of a police car a few blocks away. There was a fight between officers and Jones to bring him into custody. Jones told the judge today that he doesn't remember what happened. He said that he ate something the other day that made him "feel funny" and he hasn't slept in 5 days. He apologized for his actions. Jones' sister owned the gun legally and has a permit, no charges will be filed against her.

Starting this weekend, Saturday August 18th, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation will be closing off access to Devilâ€™s Pool swimming hole in the Wissahickon Valley Park on weekends through the end of September. Barriers will be erected on the orange and white trail heads at Livezey Lane and at Valley Green Road. All other trails in the park will remain open. The biggest reason for the closure is safety concerns, especially with the destination's rising popularity. There is no cell service in the area in case of emergency, water quality is poor, undercurrents are unpredictable, there are no lifeguards, and it's already technically illegal.
