Four children and one adult were killed in a multi-car crash in New Castle County, Delaware, on Friday afternoon, 7/6. It happened just before 4 p.m. on Route 1 North near Pine Tree Road in Townsend. A work truck heading southbound crossed the grassy median into the northbound lanes. It clipped a white car and continued south before being broadsided by a minivan. A family of six from New Jersey was in that minivan, 2 adults and 4 young kids. Only 1 adult survived and was taken to the hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries. The driver of the white car and 2 people in the truck were also taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Authorities do not yet know why the pickup crossed over the median. They are still investigating the accident.
UPDATE: The fatal victims of the crash have now been identified as 61-year-old Audie Trinidad of Teaneck, N.J. His children were 20-year-old Kaitlyn, 17-year-old Danna and two 13-year-olds, Melissa and Allison (see photo below). His 53-year-old wife was hospitalized with serious injuries. Police say the parents were properly restrained, but the children were not. The driver of the F-350 pickup truck was a 44-year-old man from East New Market, MD. His passenger was a 30-year-old man from Hurlock, MD. Both were treated and released. The driver of the other car was a 24-year-old man from Bethlehem, PA.
Two Philadelphia Police cruisers were involved in a crash on Friday afternoon, 7/6, in Northeast Philadelphia. It happened around 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Brous and Unruh Avenues in Mayfair. A civilian driver was also involved. The officers were responding to an assist call at Longshore Avenue and Tulip Street in the Tacony section. One car was coming down Brous and the other Unruh when they collided at the intersection. The third car was on Brous. They suffered minor injuries and went to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital. The civilian did not get injured. (see photo below)
Video of Philadelphia Police arresting a black teenager outside the Philadelphia Zoo on Thursday, 7/5, has surfaced on social media. It happened around 12:30 p.m. A group of young black males were on the Zoo Plaza selling water. They claimed to be members of the North Philly Aztecs football team and were raising money (although head coach Greg Bonner says these boys were never on the team). Regardless, the Zoo does not allow commercial activity on its property. They also say this group has caused problems before. A white zoo security officer tried to disperse the group and one of them made a threatening remark. That's when she waved down a passing patrol car. This video (see below) starts at this point when an officer has a 14-year-old on the ground and is placing him in handcuffs. A black zoo security officer is seeing yelling at the other security officer, "Is this what you want?" The 14-year-old and a 53-year-old man were cited for disorderly conduct. Philadelphia Police Captain Sekou Kinebrew said that internal investigations will review every part of their police officer's involvement.
The Zoo released this statement: "Yesterday, one of the Zoo’s public safety officers interacted with a group of youth on the plaza outside of the Zoos gates. There have been a number of incidents with this particular group, including soliciting money from Zoo guests, throwing rocks at a Zoo staff member (just the previous day) and harassing another female public safety officer just before this incident occurred. The Zoo always asks individuals or groups engaging in aggressive or commercial behaviors to leave the Zoo’s Plaza. When asked to leave the area, the group began to move off but made a threatening remark to the public safety officer as a Philadelphia Police Department vehicle was driving by. At that time the public safety officer flagged down the Philadelphia Police Department vehicle and asked for help in dispersing the group. Unexpectedly, the subsequent interactions between PPD and the group resulted in the arrest of one of the individuals involved. This is an unfortunate and unusual incident at the Zoo. Philadelphia Zoo is an integral part of the City of Philadelphia and is proud of the diversity of the staff who work here and guests who visit; we work closely with our neighbors in the West Philadelphia community and the Philadelphia Police Department and will continue to do so."
