1 Dead After SEPTA Bus Crashes Into House; Police Teardown #AbolishICEPHL Camp; ATM Explosive Arrest

One person is dead and several more injured after a SEPTA bus crashed into a home in Northeast Philadelphia on Thursday evening, 7/5. It happened after 6 p.m. at the intersection of Frankford and Morrell Avenues. The bus was traveling east on Morrell towards the T-intersection at Frankford. It was going to make a right turn but instead went through the red light. It hit a white Lincoln which hit a red Ford Fusion. The bus continued straight across the intersection and drove across a front yard before crashing into the front of a house. A a 21-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man were hurt and a 53-year-old man was killed. They were out front of the home. The drivers of both cars were taken to Jefferson Torresdale hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The 49-year-old bus driver was not injured. There were 15 passengers on the bus who were treated for various minor injuries. L+I inspectors will come to evaluate the damage to the home. Police do not yet know what caused the driver to loose control of the bus.

UPDATE: The man killed has been identified as 52-year-old James Derbyshire.

Protestors again clashed with Philadelphia police at Philadelphia's Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Center City on Thursday, 7/5. Demonstrators had rebuilt an encampment outside the ICE offices at 8th and Cherry Streets. Police ordered the protesters to move back and gave three warnings that they could not block the street or the entrance to the building. The video shows officers moving swiftly to dismantle the encampment. Seven protestors were arrested for resisting. They are calling to abolish ICE, the end of President Trump's "zero tolerance" immigration policy, and the reunification of immigrant families separated after crossing the border. The #AbolishICEPHL protestors have been there all week. 29 were arrested on Monday, 7/2. Many returned Thursday evening to sit in the street.

A second person has been arrested in connection to a series of ATM explosions in Philadelphia. Juan Cortez of Collingdale, Delaware County, was arrested earlier this week following a traffic stop. Officers found a large number of M-type devices, the same type used to try to blow up ATMs like the one caught on video in Port Richmond last month. Cortez has been selling these illegal explosives and even made deal with undercover agents in the same car. The case has attracted attention from federal, city, and county officials. The Pennsylvania State Attorney General's office will handle the prosecution.
