Man Planned Cleveland Attack, Looked at Philly; Teen/Mother Charged in Crash; SEPTA Train Stranded

A man was arrested for planning a terrorist attack in Cleveland, OH, for July 4th. Authorities say that he also desired to attack Philadelphia sometime in the future. American-born Demetrius Pitts, also known as Abdur Raheem Rafeeq and Salah ad-Deen Osama Walee, was arrested on Sunday morning, 7/1, and charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. He has an criminal history including charges of assault, domestic violence, aggravated robbery and carrying a concealed weapon. The FBI began tracking Pitts after he started posting disturbing posts several years ago to social media in support of Al-Qaeda and a expressing a desire to kill military personnel, federal and local agents, and their families. Stephen Anthony, the Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Cleveland Division, said that Pitts told an undercover agent that he was planning an attack on the 4th of July parade in downtown Cleveland. He also conducted reconnaissance on locations in the city to park a van filled with explosives. Pitts also said he wanted to conduct an attack on Philadelphia in the future sometime around Labor Day with the Federal Building or City Hall as targets. He lived in Philadelphia briefly in 2011 in the Roxborough area. He faces 20 years if convicted on the current charges.

A teenage girl and her mother are now facing charges after the girl struck and killed two men while learning to drive with her month last month in a Philadelphia parking lot. 32-year-old Stephanie Hernandez and her 15-year-old daughter have been charged with homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter and other related charges. It happened around 8:45 p.m. on June 4th outside the Dollar Tree store on the 3600 block of Aramingo Avenue in Port Richmond. The 15-year-old driver was at the wheel of the black Ford Explorer and was pulling straight ahead into a parking spot. Two homeless men in their 50s were guiding her into the spot when something happened and the vehicle lurched forward striking the men. A 54-year-old man and a 55-year-old man died in the crash. A driver needs to be 16-years-old to obtain a learner's permit in Pennsylvania.

Passengers on a SEPTA Regional Rail train were stranded on Monday afternoon, 7/2, for over an hour after the train broke down. Train 9741 traveling to Trenton stopped near 34th Street and Girard Avenue behind the Philadelphia Zoo around 5 p.m. With temperatures outside in the upper 90s and no air conditioning in the train, conditions in the stranded cars quickly became uncomfortable. Eventually a backup train arrived and the 350 passengers were able to transfer over to the new cars and continue their journey.
