No New Jersey Government Shutdown; Immigration Protest at Logan Square; West Philly Deadly Drive-by

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and state legislative leaders arrived at deal on the state's budget just hours before the midnight deadline which will keep the government open and running. This will keep beaches and parks open for the July 4th holiday. The deal was announced this afternoon from the Governor's office and included Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, Senate President Steve Sweeney, and other lawmakers. Lawmakers were stuck on how to pay for the $37.4 billion budget. This budget will not raise the sales tax, but does add a tax on e-cigarettes and lodgings like Airbnb. Income tax on those who make $5 million or more was rasied from 8.97 percent to 10.75 percent. It also raises a business tax on companies making more than $1 million an average of 2 percent over 4 years. That expires after 4 years. Both the Assembly and Senate will vote on Sunday morning.

Demonstrators took to the streets across the country on Saturday, 6/30, to speak out on immigration policy. Many people dealt with the blistering heat to gather in Logan Square in Philadelphia. Protestors want to see an end to the zero-tolerance policy that is currently responsible for detaining thousands of immigrants who have made illegal crossings of the southern border in the past few months. They also are calling for any children being detained to be reunited with their parents. Last week, President Trump issued an executive order stopping the separation of families, but it did not address the around 2,000 children who had already been sent to detention centers across the country. A federal judge issued a separate order to US Customs officials to reunite those children within 30 days. The process is moving slowly as officials find appropriate housing to hold families together and work through legal issues.

Philadelphia Police are investigating after a 29-year-old man was killed in a drive-by shooting in West Philadelphia early Saturday morning, 6/30. It happened around 2:30 a.m. on the 4200 block of Wallace Street in the Powelton neighborhood. The victim was walking along when the driver of a car opened fire, hitting him several times. He tried to run and turned the corner onto the 600 block of North 42nd Street, but the driver had turned around and began shooting again. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police found 18 shell casings. They have not yet released a possible motive or suspect.
