Dump Truck Kills Bicyclist in North Philly; Power Outages Center City; NJ Bans Child Marriages

A man on a bicycle was struck and killed by a dump truck in North Philadelphia on Friday morning, 6/22. It happened after 8:30 a.m. at Whitaker Avenue and Luzerne Street in the city's Franklinville section. The truck was traveling westbound on Luzerne Street and the man on the bicycle was riding alongside. The truck driver tried to turn right onto Whitaker Avenue when he hit the cyclist. Police say that the bike was in the driver's blind spot and ended up wedged underneath. The 40-year-old man was rushed to Temple University Hospital where he died about an hour later. Police are calling it a tragedy. No charges are expected.

An electrical accident that injured one worker also caused power outages in parts of Center City this afternoon. Police and fire department crews responded to reports of a possible explosion at the Sheridan building located at 125 South 9th Street near Sansom shortly after 1:30 p.m. The incident happened in the basement of the building. The injured worker was taken to Jefferson University Hospital with burns. Nearly 20 PECO customers were affected by the outage. The entire building was evacuated. Other nearby buildings like Wills Eye Hospital also reported outages.

New Jersey has become the second state in the nation to ban underage marriage. Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy signed the bill Friday. Delaware enacted a similar ban last month. The new law bars anyone under the age of 18 from being issued a marriage or civil union license, regardless of parental or judicial consent. Previously, parents or guardians could consent to the marriage, or a judge if a party was under 16. The law is meant help protect young people and prevent forced marriages. The New Jersey Department of Health says there had been 123 marriages with at least one partner under 18 from 2011-2016.
