Former Pennsylvania Governor and Philadelphia Mayor Ed Rendell announced today that he has been battling Parkinson's disease. The 74-year-old made the announcement Monday, 6/18, at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia alongside officials and doctors from the University of Pennsylvania. He said he was "stunned" when he was diagnosed 3 years ago. However, he said that he has been undergoing treatment and taking medication and the progression of the disease has stopped. "The good news is I can say without any fear of contradiction at least in my own mind that my disease has stabilized - progression has in many ways stopped," Rendell said. "Some of the symptoms that I was undergoing are better now than they were 3 years ago." The lawyer and politician says he still keeps a busy schedule and would not have been able to if the disease had not been caught early. Dr. Matthew Stern, a University of Pennsylvania Health System neurologist, says they can now "significantly reduce" the effects of Parkinson's disease. Rendell first noticed problems with hands trembling and balance before deciding to get checked out.

Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill was in court today for a hearing on whether he should get a new trial for his 2009 conviction on drug and weapons offenses. It was held in front of Judge Genece Brinkley, who Mill's lawyers had unsuccessfully tried to have removed from the case in front of the PA Supreme Court earlier this month citing bias. Brinkley has overseen the case since the original trial and throughout his probation. That original conviction has been called into question as allegations the arresting officer may have provided false testimony have recently been brought up. Brinkley did not issue a decision in court. She said she will rule in "due time." A "Stand With Meek Mill" rally was held outside the court house.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy does not want the violence that broke out at an art festival on Sunday morning, 6/17, to discourage the community from holding the event next year. He believes the city needs the festival "now more than ever." Mayor-elect Reed Gusciora also agreed the 12-year event should return next year, but with added security measures.
