New Jersey Sports Gambling Open; Shop Vac Caused Gas Station Explosion; Fire at Burger King in NE

Sports betting is now open in New Jersey after a long legal battle that ended with a favorable decision by the Supreme Court for the Garden State. Governor Phil Murphy was the first to place a wager at Monmouth Park in North Jersey on Thursday morning, 6/14. He put $20 on Germany to win the World Cup and $20 on the New Jersey Devils to win next year's Stanley Cup. In Atlantic City, Philadelphia 76ers legend Dr. J was the first to place a bet at the new sports book in the Borgata. He put down $5 on the Philadelphia Eagles repeating as Super Bowl champions this season. Apparently they are in it for the long play. Internet gaming can take effect in 30 days. Expect activity at the sports books to really pick up when football season (NFL and NCAA) starts at the end of August.

Officials have ruled the gas station explosion that killed the co-owner and severely injured a worker an accident. Bensalem Fire Rescue announced on Thursday that a shop vacuum being used underground to suck out water from around the gas tank caused the explosion. It happened on Tuesday afternoon, 6/12, on the 1200 block of Bristol Pike in Bensalem. Co-owner Joe Vigilante was down inside cleaning the concrete vault and removing water. 63-year-old Frank Tomaselli, a part-time worker, was at the top of the ladder outside when the explosion happened. Vigilante was killed by the blast and buried by debris. It took recovery crews over 24 hours to recover his body from the dangerous underground vault. Tomaselli was severely wounded with burns over 45-percent of his body. He is in critical condition at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital's Burn Unit.

Firefighters fought a fire at a Burger King restaurant in Northeast Philadelphia on Thursday afternoon. It happened around 4 p.m. at the restaurant in the 2500 block of Welsh Road. Heavy smoke was reported coming from the roof. Firefighters brought the blaze under control around 4:45 p.m. There were no reports of any injuries. There is an investigation into the cause of the fire.
