Federal Judge Rules For Philly Sanctuary City; Teacher Took Bribes For Grades; Prison in Wawa Attack

A federal judge ruled on Wednesday, 6/6, that the Trump administration cannot cut off grants to the City of Philadelphia for failing to meet certain conditions involving the way the city handles illegal immigrants. U.S. District Judge Michael Baylson issued a 93-page memo in which he called those conditions unconstitutional, "arbitrary and capricious." Baylson also said that Philadelphia's policies were reasonable and appropriate. Philadelphia maintains that it will turn over immigrants to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) if they have a signed warrant from a judge. The new conditions were added last year for cities to receive a Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (or JAG grant). They include allowing ICE into prisons to interview persons-of-interest and advance notice of the release of those persons. Philadelphia sued when Attorney General threatened to withhold the $1.6 million grant because the city would not comply. That money is usually used for police overtime, training, equipment, and other criminal justice needs. A federal appeal court sided with the City of Chicago back in April in a similar case. Mayor Jim Kenney was excited about the ruling.

A Philadelphia school teacher is now under investigation after being accused of taking bribes from students in exchange for better grades. Amanda Richardson has been removed from her job as a humanities teacher at LINC High School on W. Erie Ave. in North Philadelphia pending the outcome of the investigation by the Inspector General and Philadelphia Police. The Philadelphia School District is cooperating. No word on the specifics of the bribes.

A Delaware woman was sentenced to 15 days in prison on Wednesday for attacking Wawa workers over a botched sandwich order. Tiffany Evans pled guilty to third-degree assault. She must also pay $900 restitution to a Wawa employee involved in the incident and have no contact with any local Wawa store. In April, Evans had ordered a sandwich and yelled at a male employee for making a mistake while making it. A female employee told her to stop yelling and that they'd make a new one. Evans then threw hot coffee in the female's face. The coffee also hit the male, his phone, and $200 worth of food in the deli. Evans then pepper sprayed the female employee and threatened to shoot her.
