Kathleen Kane's Conviction Upheld; Pre-Prom Deadly Shooting; Boyertown Transgender Policy Upheld

Former Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane's conviction was upheld by a three-judge Superior Court panel on Friday, 5/25. Kane was convicted of leaking grand jury information to hurt a political rival and then lying about it to a separate grand jury. The panel ruled against her claims that Montgomery County judges should have not have handled the case and that she should have been allowed to introduce evidence of a pornographic email scandal. Kane was sentenced to 10 to 23 months in jail in October 2016. She has been free on $75,000 bail as her appeals have been heard. She can now appeal her case to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, which does not have to take it. The Montgomery County district attorney will decide whether or not to raise or rescind bail.

Philadelphia Police are investigating after a man was shot in the head at a pre-prom party in West Philadelphia on Thursday night, 5/24. A family was holding a party for their nephew around 7 p.m. on the 600 block of South 55th Street near Pemberton Street. Around 70 people of all ages attended the party for the 17-year-old senior from Boys Latin High School. The teen left at 8:15 p.m. Sometime after he departed a gunman opened fire on the crowd of party goers. The 23-year-old victim was rushed to Penn Presbyterian Hospital where he died a few hours later. The gunman is described as male, late teens, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt. He may live in the neighborhood and have attended the party. There is a $20,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction. Anyone with any information is asked to call police at 215-686-TIPS.

Update: Police are now saying that after further investigation the party is not connected to the shooting. The incident just happened on the same block and across the street. They are still looking for the shooter.

A federal appeals court upheld a lower court's ruling in favor of a Pennsylvania school district's policy that allows transgender students to use locker rooms and bathrooms according to the gender indentity. The three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia took only 20 minutes to unanimously issue their bench decision. Six students in Boyertown Area School District, assisted by conservative group Alliance Defending Freedom, filed suit claiming that the policy violated their constitutional right to privacy. One student, Alexis Lightcap, said, "They made me feel like I was the problem for feeling uncomfortable, unsafe and vulnerable with a boy in my bathroom." Circuit Judge Theodore McKee said that the plaintiffs failed to show the school's policy infringed on their privacy. Boyertown has installed single-user bathrooms and shower stalls for any student who is uncomfortable. The panel expects to issue a full opinion soon.
