Mumia Abu-Jamal Hearing Continued to Aug; PPA Amnesty Ending; Lincoln Drive Construction Begins

Today's hearing on Mumia Abu-Jamal's Post-Conviction Relief Act petition in Philadelphia was pushed back to August to allow for more time to locate missing documents. The defense cites bias and conflict of interest involving State Supreme Court Justice Ronald Castille. As a justice, Castille denied Abu-Jamal's post conviction appeals. He was also district attorney when Abu-Jamal's direct appeal was pending. The missing memo supposedly shows Castille had personal involvement with the case. The Philadelphia District Attorney's office assigned a paralegal to locate the documents, but after an exhaustive search they could not finding anything. There will be a deposition on July 9th and new hearing is set for August 30th. There were dozens of protesters outside of the Criminal Justice Center at 13th and Filbert calling supporting Mumia's freedom. "Mumia Abu-Jamal will not - not ever - be free," Officer Daniel Faulkner's widow Maureen Faulkner said. "Heâ€™s going to be behind bars for the rest of his life, and I will make sure of that."

Today, 4/30, is the last day of the Philadelphia Parking Authority's parking ticket amnesty program. Long lines stretched from the PPA's headquarters at 9th and Filbert since early this morning. The office normally closes at 6 p.m. but a spokesman said they will be staying late in order to get everyone in line. In order to qualify for the program, offenders must pay off any ticket from Jan. 1, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2017. After that, most outstanding tickets from before 2013 are cleared with a one-time $50 administrative fee. Thousands of people have already taken advantage of the program.

A $12.1 million restoration project begins today, 4/30, on Lincoln Drive. The work will be done between Ridge and Wayne Aves. The project includes roadway resurfacing, guard rail and median improvements, traffic signal replacements, and pedestrian upgrades. There will be no lane closures during morning and evening rush hours. Work between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. should have minimal impact on morning rush traffic. There may be one-lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Overnight work from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. will involve some full road closures. Construction is expected to last through the end of 2019. It is being funded by 80% Federal and 20% City funds.
