Mumia Abu-Jamal Returns to Court; Deadly Fire in Oxford Circle; Teen Shot in Germantown

Convicted cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal will be back in a Philadelphia court room on Monday, 4/30. He has petitioned District Attorney Larry Krasner to vacate his previous failed attempts at appeals, which would then allow him to re-appeal his case. This Post-Conviction Relief Act or PCRA petition cites bias and conflict of interest involving State Supreme Court Justice Ronald Castille. As a judge, Castille denied Abu-Jamal's appeals. He was also Senior Assistant District Attorney during his trial. DA Krasner has taken an unorthodox approach to the office thus far and many do not know what to expect in court Monday. Maureen Faulkner wants the District Attorney to remember the 37 years of pain she has suffered from the loss of her husband. Mumia Abu-Jamal is serving life in prison for the 1981 murder of Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner.

One person is dead after a house fire in the Oxford Circle section of Northeast Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon, 4/29. It happened around 12:40 p.m. on the 6900 block of Oakland Street. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control within 15 minutes. A 69-year-old female was transported to Jefferson University Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The homeowner, William Roseman, said that his tenant was supposed to go to church with him, but decided to stay home because she didn't feel well. A friend identified her as Doreen Davis. The cause of the fire in under investigation.

A 17-year-old is in critical condition after being shot early on Sunday morning, 4/29, in Germantown. It happened around 1:30 a.m. on the 5100 block of Knox St. The teen was at his aunt's house with two other teens when he was shot once in the stomach. He was transported by private car to Einstein Medical Center. There have been no arrests. Police are looking for the two teens he was with at the time of the shooting.
