| Starbucks Protests in Rittenhouse; Eagles Release CB Daryl Worley; Jay Wright Gives Pope Basketball |

Demonstrators and protestors rallied at the Starbucks store in Rittenhouse Square at the center of racial tensions on Sunday afternoon following the arrest of two black men last week accused of trespassing while waiting for a friend to arrive (watch video of the protest below). The store is located on 18th and Spruce Streets in Center City. Protestors from various groups had signs and demanded the firings of the Starbucks manager who called police and the officers who made the arrests.
The incident happened on Thursday around 4:30 pm. The men, who had been waiting for a third person, asked to use the restroom. An employee told them it was only for paying customers and then asked them to leave. The police were called when they refused. The officers also asked them to leave several times before arresting them for trespassing. Starbucks later declined to press charges and they were released hours later. Video of the arrests went viral and has been seen millions of times (see video below). Many believe that the two men were singled out because they were black, including witnesses in the store. Starbucks locations around the world are known as places where people linger, meet up, get some work done, wait for someone (before, after, or never purchasing something).
Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson issued a statement on Saturday night. He also added, "First, to once again express our deepest apologies to the two men who were arrested with a goal of doing whatever we can to make things right. Second, to let you know of our plans to investigate the pertinent facts and make any necessary changes to our practices that would help prevent such an occurrence from ever happening again. And third, to reassure you that Starbucks stands firmly against discrimination or racial profiling."
"These officers did absolutely nothing wrong," said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross. "They followed policy. They did what they were supposed to do." "On three different occasions the officers asked the two males politely to leave the location because they were being asked to leave by employees because they were trespassing," he said. "Instead the males continued to refuse as they had told the employees and they told the officers they were not leaving."
The Philadelphia Eagles have released corner back Daryl Worley after he was arrested this morning in South Philly. Police responded to a vehicle blocking the highway near Broad Street and Pattison Avenue around 6 a.m. Sunday morning. They found Worley passed out behind the wheel. Apparently, he became combative with officers and they used a Taser. A gun was also found. He is currently at police headquarters awaiting arraignment on DUI and gun charges. He will be represented by Philadelphia defense attorney Fortunato Perry. Worley was acquired from the Carolina Pathers last month. He is native of North Philadelphia and played at Penn Charter.
The President and Trustees of Villanova University met with Pope Francis at the Vatican on Saturday during a special audience with the pontiff. The trustees were in Rome for their spring meeting. Villanova was founded in 1842 by the Order of Saint Augustine. The Pope said the University was founded “to preserve and pass on the richness of the Catholic tradition to new generations of students, who like the young Augustine, seek true meaning and value in the true life.†Villanova Basketball head coach Jay Wright presented Pope Francis with a basketball signed by the 2018 NCAA National Championship team.
