Two former SEPTA police officers turned themselves in today after being accused of assaulting a man last December. 29-year-old David Simcox has been charged with Aggravated Assault, Simple Assault, Recklessly Endangering Another Person and Filing False Reports. 29-year-old Johnathan Lanciano has been charged with Simple Assault, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, Filing False Reports and Harassment. It happened at the Frankford Transportation Center around 12:30 a.m. on December 12, 2017. The officers responded to the call of an intoxicated person. When they arrived, the man was sitting on the platform with his legs dangling over. The officers say that the man physically resisted them. An Internal Affairs investigation of the station surveillance video and body-worn camera footage shows that the man did not strike the officers and did not have a weapon. Police say the officers attacked him, punching the victim several times, and broke his nose. They were fired from the SEPTA Transit Police Department earlier this year.
Philadelphia Police have made an arrest in the murder of an art student who was found strangled to death in Cobbs Creek last November. 22-year-old David Grier of Philadelphia has been arrested and charged with murder of 21-year-old Kierra Johnson. Johnson was a student at Hussian School of Art. She was reported missing on November 3, 2017. Her body was found in the creek by a passerby the next day. She had been strangled to death. Police say that she was last seen with Grier and that they knew each other. The motive was sexual in nature. Grier was on parole at the time. He had been arrested in 2016 for attempted murder in Oakland, California.
Today, Thursday, April 12 is Wawa Day. The convenience store chain is celebrating its 54th anniversary by giving away free cups of coffee at its more than 790 stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia and Florida. The first Wawa Food Market opened on April 16, 1964 in Folsom, PA. You can get any size cup of coffee for free just today. Also, Wawa has unveiled a "Wawa Secret Menu" (or not so secret) on the ordering screens that will be available through May 6th. To access the secret menu, simply touch the flying Wawa goose logo in the bottom left corner of the screen. The 'vault' will open and you'll see the menu. There are only two items to choose from: birthday cake milkshake and a birthday cake smoothie (ps they aren't free). Wawa encourages you to share the #WawaSecretMenu. The company expects to give away 2 millions cups of coffee.
