Jefferson and Einstein to Merge; Bucks County Man Sentenced in Mother's Murder; NJ Medical Marijuana

Another healthcare merger is expected to be announced at a news conference on Wednesday morning. Einstein Healthcare Network will be merging with the Jefferson Health System. Einstein's system includes its main hospital on North Broad Street, Moss Rehab in Elkins Park, and Einstein Montgomery in Norristown. Jefferson has been expanding in the past few years. It acquired Philadelphia University and Magee Rehab. It's also partnered with the Abington Health System, former Aria Hospitals in the Northeast/Bucks, and Kennedy Hospitals in South Jersey. More details will be released at the official announcement at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

A Bucks County man diagnosed with schizophrenia has been sentenced to prison for murdering his mother in their home. 32-year-old Zachary Cope of Lower Makefield Township pled guilty, but mentally ill, to third-degree murder in the stabbing death of 52-year-old Rebecca Cope. He was sentenced to 10 to 40 years in prison. It happened in December 2016. They were having an argument about putting olive oil on a cutting board. Cope said that he believed that his mother "morphed" into an FBI agent "or vice-versa" and was posing as a hired assassin. He stabbed her over 70 times and then went and flagged down a passing motorist. He will be credited for time served.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced an expansion of the state's medical marijuana program, the same day a panel established by the Democratic governor pushlished their recommendations. Five additional conditions will now qualify for the program. They include anxiety, migraines, Tourette's syndrome, chronic pain related to musculoskeletal disorders and chronic visceral pain. The patient fee will be reduced from $200 to $100, and will be $20 for veterans and seniors. Doctors who prescribe marijuana will be able to opt out of being listed on a public registry. Murphy also recommended changing the law to double the monthly limit from 2 ounces to 4 ounces and make edibles available. Separately, Murphy has begun pushing for legalizing recreational marijuana in the state.
