Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum appeared on CNN's "State of the Union" program on Sunday and discussed the thousands of students who participated in the March for Our Lives protests around the country on Saturday. Santorum suggested that instead of calling on someone else (ie. legislators) to fix the problem by passing some "phony gun law," the students should take it upon themselves to help prevent shootings by dealing with bullying and to prepare to respond to shootings if they happen. Santorum said, "How about kids instead of looking to someone else to solve their problem, do something about maybe taking CPR classes or trying to deal with situations that when there is a violent shooter that you can actually respond to that."
He continued, "They took action to ask someone to pass a law. They didn't take action to say, 'How do I, as an individual, deal with this problem? How am I going to do something about stopping bullying within my own community? What am I going to do to actually help respond to a shooter?'... Those are the kind of things where you can take it internally, and say, 'Here's how I'm going to deal with this. Here's how I'm going to help the situation,' instead of going and protesting and saying, 'Oh, someone else needs to pass a law to protect me."
"I'm proud of them," he said. "But I think everyone should be responsible and deal with the problems that we have to confront in our lives. And ignoring those problems and saying they're not going to come to me and saying some phony gun law is gonna solve it. Phony gun laws don't solve these problems."
Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Michael Bennett appeared in court on Monday afternoon in Houston, TX. He faces a charge of injury to the elderly, included intentionally and knowingly, causing bodily injury to a person 65 years or older for an incident at Super Bowl LI held at NRG Stadium on Feb 5, 2017. Bennett is accused of pushing his way through security personnel, including a 66-year-old paraplegic woman, to gain access to the field following the game. Security had told him to use a different entrance. The woman suffered a sprained shoulder. The charge carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Bennett was traded from the Seattle Seahawks to the Philadelphia Eagles on March 14th. Neither team were aware of the incident before the trade.
A man has been charged in a double stabbing yesterday in Camden that left a woman dead and her son injured. It happened around 3 pm on the 2800 block of Garfield Avenue. Police say that 29-year-old Raul Quinones went to his girlfriend's house, 37-year-old Elaine Jimenez, to get some belongings, but ended up stabbing her. He also stabbed her 20-year-old son several times. Both were taken to Cooper University Hospital. Jimenez later died, her son is listed in critical condition. Quinones was arrested and charged with one count of first degree murder and one count of first degree attempted murder. The incident remains under investigation.
