Wrongfully Convicted Man Released; Revised Property Tax Plan; Chester Hit-And-Run Suspect Arrested

A Philadelphia man who has been in jail for the past 11 years for a murder he may not have committed, is set to be released. 28-year-old Dontia Patterson was convicted back in 2007 for the murder of his friend that took place outside of a grocery store in Lawncrest. Officials say that during the trial, the owner of the store was going to testify stating that the shooter wasn't Patterson, but he was never called by the defense or prosecution. It took a total of two trials to convict Patterson, one ended in a deadlocked jury, the other sentenced him to life in prison, without parole. Patterson has now been approved for bail and set to be released on house arrest with electronic monitoring. Officials say that after more review, the DA's office will decide whether to drop the charges completely or to retry Patterson.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney has announced a revised property tax plan for the city. Mayor Kenney stated that he doesn't need a six percent property tax increase after all. He will still be asking for a four percent increase that will fund Philadelphia schools. The mayor decided to revise his request when new property assessment figures came in. The Office of Property Assessments reported an 11 percent increase in overall value of Philadelphia real estate. Officials say that because of the positive report, the administration can reduce its proposed rate increase. The four percent increase will bring around $966 million in funds for the district.

The suspect responsible for a hit-and-run accident that killed a father of two in Chester this past December has surrendered to authorities. 46-year-old Tia Jones arrived at the Pennsylvania State Police barracks in Media on Thursday morning. The victim in the crash, 46-year-old Ronald Jahmail Williams, was hit back on December 16th, 2017 at around 3 am. Williams was on his way home from his bar tending job when he pulled over on the Highland Avenue on-ramp to southbound I-95. He got out of his vehicle and that is when Jones hit Williams and then fled, Williams was pronounced dead on the scene. After the accident, Jones ended up hiding her car in a friend's garage and then behind some trees near her home in Delaware. Jones faces numerous charges including leaving the scene of an accident, driving with a suspended license, and causing an accident involving death. If convicted on all charges, she could face a minimum of three years in prison. Jones' bail has been set at 10% of 250,000.
