Philly Students Participate in National Walkout Day; Krasner Helps Meek Mill; Patient Saves Aide OD

Thousands of area students at high schools across Philadelphia and the surrounding counties left classes this morning to participate in National Walkout Day. Students across the country participated in the demonstration to protest gun violence and call for firearm reforms. This marks the one month anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. Protests began at 10 a.m. and lasted for at least 17 minutes, one minute for each person who was killed in Florida. Many students at Philadelphia city schools then made their way to the School District building and marched to City Hall. Many students in the city face gun violence on a daily basis. There were 15,549 people killed by guns in 2017 in the USA. Only a small percentage, 433, were killed in a mass shooting, broadly defined as 4 more more people shot (the Washington Post discusses the even rarer headline grabbing events). Students at today's rally at City Hall just want the killing to stop.

Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill, aka Robert Williams, may see some light shining in his legal case. On Tuesday at panel on criminal justice at Penn, Mill's mother, Kathy Williams, publicly pleaded Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner to 'step-in' and help her son's case. Mill is currently serving 2-4 years in state prison for multiple parole violations. On Wednesday, the District Attorney's office submitted a filing to Common Pleas Court stating "there is a strong likelihood of Williams' conviction being reversed" in whole or part. Krasner spokesman Ben Waxman said that the office is also not opposed to bail. The original arresting officer, former Philadelphia police officer Reginald Graham, has been accused of providing false testimony in Mill's 2007 trial. The determination still lies in the hands of Judge Genece Brinkley, who has handled Mill's case from the start.

Upper Darby Police have arrested a home health care worker who was saved from a drug overdose by the women she was supposedly assisting. 29-year-old Amber Graziano, of Ridley Park, suffered a heroin overdose on Monday evening. She was found by her 73-year-old patient who called 911. Graziano was taken to the hospital and revived. However, after she was released she went back to the patient's home and confronted her. Graziano, who had been subsequently fired, was upset that the woman had called the police and her employer. Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said, "This 73-year-old woman saved her life. There's no doubt she saved her life." She has been charged with with recklessly endangering another person.
