Car Theft Increase; Man ID'd In Mayfair Hit-And-Run; PPD Saving Spots Tweet

Philadelphia Police are warning drivers to keep a close eye on their car as car thefts are on the rise in the city. Police say that many suspects are stealing the cars as the car is warming up and the keys are left in the ignition. Around 33% of the car thefts have been due to the keys being left in the ignition. Many of the cars are taken to a chop shop to be sold or scraped for parts, but in some other cases, they are used for a getaway car in a crime. To prevent your car being involved in a theft, police urge people to always lock their doors and never leave the keys in the ignition.

Police have ID'd and charged the man who was wanted in connection for a hit-and-run that took place in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia on Tuesday. 31-year-old Zachary Lauer jumped the curb with his car and hit a family who was taking a walk. The one victim, a 3-year-old girl, ended up being pinned underneath the car. Luckily six pedestrians were there to help get the girl out, she was transported to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital where she was listed in critical condition with burns to her body. The girl's mother and sibling were also sent to the hospital with minor scrapes and pains. They are listed in stable condition. Police say that Lauer fled the scene after hitting the family. Drug paraphernalia was found in his car at the scene. Lauer has been charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault while driving under the influence, as well as other related offenses.

The Philadelphia Police Department's social media team has released another ad to prevent residents from saving spots during snow storms. Back in December, the department released a parody add called "Savesie Things" which spoofed the popular Netflix show 'Stranger Things.' This time around, the PPD posted a GIF of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady's misfortune at Super Bowl LII. In place of Brandon Graham stripping the football from Brady, it was a cone being stripped. The post stated "Not everything (or everyone) can stage a comeback - but the snow sure did! Remember: Saving Parking spots is illegal; so, be the GOAT - shovel and share!"
