Over 100 residents and hotel guests were evacuated early this morning because of a 4-alarm fire in Old City. The fire started in a building near 3rd and Chestnut around 3 a.m. Firefighters arrived to heavy smoke and flames coming from the windows and roof. The building has retail/restaurant space at street level and apartments above. About 160 people were evacuated including neighboring buildings such as the Best Western Independence Park Hotel. The fire was brought under control by 7 a.m., but fire crews remained to tamp out hotspots. The Red Cross and Red Paw Relief were on scene to assist the residents and their pets. No one was injured but several pets did not make it out. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The building is directly across the street from The Museum of the American Revolution. That is closed today due to the fire activity and investigation.

A 15-year-old Boy Scout was rescued after becoming trapped in a cave in Lancaster County on Saturday evening. It started around 5:30 p.m. at the Wind Cave in Pequea, Martic Township. He was exploring with his troop and leaders when he became stuck. It took dozens of rescuers about seven hours to free the teen. He was taken to the hospital to be treated for hypothermia.

The first medical marijuana dispensaries in Pennsylvania opened for business on Saturday. Two of them are in our area, Terra Vida Holistic Center in Sellersville, Bucks County and Keystone Shops in Devon, Chester County. More dispensaries will open weekly. There are 3-4,000 patients who have approved medical marijuana cards and 17,000 who have applied. Pennsylvania’s Acting Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine tell patients with a card that it is important to setup an appointment before going to the dispensary the first time. There will be a consultation with a medical professional. "There will be a significant discussion about what symptoms you’re having," she said, "and there will be a determination of what form of medical marijuana would best help you with your symptoms, and what dose."
