Appeal In Lawsuit For Soda Tax; Court Employee Fired/Meek Mill Letter; No Crisco On Poles For SB LII

Pennsylvania's highest court will now hear an appeal in a lawsuit challenging Philadelphia's year-old tax on soda and other sweetened drinks. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court stated that it will hear the appeal on whether or not the tax violates a 1932 law prohibiting Philadelphia from taxing a transaction or subject that is already taxed in the state. A lower court upheld the tax, saying that it does not duplicate the state's sales tax because it is imposed on distributors. The money from the tax is designed to help pay for pre-kindergarten, community schools, and recreation centers in Philadelphia.

A Philadelphia court employee has been fired after she handed Meek Mill a letter during one of his hearings. The employee, Wanda Chavarria, handed a letter to the Philly-native rapper that stated: "As a fan of the art, I'm praying that you would be able to help my son." The letter asked Mill to donate money for her son's college tuition. The letter appeared on TMZ where she admitted to handing Mill the letter during one of his hearings in Philadelphia. City court officials stated: "The Philadelphia Courts have always prioritized fairness, impartiality and the highest ethical standards. The Courts fully expect all employees to conduct themselves in a principled and professional manner so as not to infringe upon the neutrality of the courtroom. Following a review of the incident involving Ms. Wanda Chavarria, she has been terminated. Because this is a personnel matter there will be no further comment."

Philadelphia Police commissioner Richard Ross stated that police will not grease up the poles in the city for Super Bowl LII like they did for the NFC Championship game. Police greased up the poles with Crisco to prevent fans from climbing them, however the method did not seem to work too well as fans were able to climb up on some of the poles. With the Super Bowl just a couple of days away, Ross stated that although the poles won't be greased, there will be other measures to keep fans off. Philadelphia Police will be sending out uniformed officers as well as plainclothes personnel that will be watching over heavily populated areas to ensure safety for everyone.
