Off-Duty Officer Shoots Erratic Driver; 4 Dead in Reading Shooting; PATCO Train Hits Utility Pole

An off-duty Philadelphia Police detective shot a driver this morning in South Philly who was driving erratically and appeared to be trying to run over pedestrians along Broad Street. It happened at 7:30 a.m. Monday morning. A bicycle officer reported that a black Honda was driving irregularly on Broad Street near Bigler Street and was apparently trying to hit people. One person was actually struck. A concerned citizen blocked the path of the suspect using her SUV. That is when the off-duty officer arrived and approached the suspect. The driver got out of his car and a struggle ensued after the driver began to attack the detective. The off-duty detective fired several shots and hit the suspect in the head. He was taken to Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition. The person who was struck by the suspect's vehicle was also taken to the hospital in serious condition but with non life-threatening injuries. The off-duty officer was treated for minor injuries. The driver's identity has not been released, but he was driving a car with Maryland plates and has a Virginia driver's license. The detective's identity has also not been released other than he is assigned to the Major Crimes Division. The shooting will be handled by the Officer-Involved Shooting Investigative Unit. The detective will be placed on administrative duty during the investigation. Commissioner Richard Ross said the struggle was caught on surveillance video. He also said, "I do have some concerns about the shooting. In particular, whether all the shots were necessary."

UPDATE: The suspect shot by an off-duty detective has died.

Four men were killed in a shooting in Reading, Berks County, on Sunday evening. Police responded to the scene inside a row home on South 3rd Street at 7 p.m. Three of the men have been identified as 20-year-old Jarlyn Lantigua-Tejada; 23-year-old Juan Rodriguez; and 20-year-old Joshua Santos. The fourth victim is also a male in his early 20s. One of the victims lives at the residence. Police are still looking for a suspect and a motive in the incident. They do not believe it was random.

A PATCO train from New Jersey to Philadelphia hit a downed utility pole during the morning rush causing havoc for commuters all day. It happened around 5:45 a.m. near the Ferry Avenue Station. The train that hit the pole was carrying 24 passengers at the time. Minor injuries were reported. Service was completely shutdown for hours. Limited service is running from Camden to Philadelphia. Officials are still investigating the cause but it appears the electrical pole was first hit by a Conrail freight train on an upper deck before being struck by the PATCO train below. 38,000 riders use the line daily.
