PA Supreme Court Throws Out District Map; Bill Cosby Jury Selection; Deadly South Jersey Fire

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court threw out the current boundaries of the 18 congressional districts on Monday. Registered Democrats had filed a lawsuit last June saying that the districts, which were redrawn in 2010, were unconstitutionally gerrymandered to benefit Republicans. The court said that the map "clearly, plainly and palpably" violate the state's constitution and cannot be used for the 2018 elections. The Republican-controlled Legislature has to pass a replacement by February 9th and Dem. Gov. Tom Wolf has until February 15th to submit it to the court. Primary elections are May 15th. Republican lawmakers plan to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to halt the decision. Many incumbent members of Congress running for reelection and dozens of others challenging seats may no longer live in the same district if maps are changed for this election. The U.S. Supreme Court is already considering the issue of gerrymandering in a case right now.

Jury selection has been set for the retrial of entertainer Bill Cosby. Selection will start on March 29th. Trial will once again be held in Norristown, Montgomery County in suburban Philadelphia. During the first trial, the jury was selected from the Pittsburgh area. It ended in a mistrial after 5 days of deliberations when the jury couldn't reach a unanimous verdict. This time the jury will be selected locally. Cosby is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a Temple University women's basketball assistant in his Cheltenham home in 2004. The retrial will start on April 2nd. 80-year-old Cosby appeared on Monday evening at LaRose Jazz Club in Germantown, his last public appearance since May 2015. He told stories and sat in on drums.

A father and his two children were killed in a fire overnight in Cumberland County, New Jersey. It broke out just before 2 a.m. in the two-story house on the unit block of Park Avenue in Brigeton. The 28-year-old father, 5-year-old son, an 6-year-old daughter died at the scene. The 27-year-old mother, 10-year-old son, and 33-year-old male relative were rescued from the second floor apartment. A 27-year-old woman and her 2-year-old daughter who lived in the first floor made it out safely. The mother was treated at Crozier-Chester Medical Center and her son was taken to St. Christopher's Hospital. The male relative was treated at Inspira Hospital in Vineland. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
