Man Shot In Grocery Store; First PA Medical Marijuana Dispensary; Philly Suing Opioid Companies

Philadelphia Police are now investigating after a man was shot and killed in North Philadelphia on Wednesday night. The shooting took place at a grocery store on the 3300 block of North 6th Street at around 7:05 pm. The 22-year-old victim suffered gunshot wounds to the head and upper torso. He was transported to Temple University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. There was no weapon left behind at the crime scene and police are still searching for the suspect.

The first medical marijuana dispensary in Pennsylvania opened up in Lehigh Valley on Wednesday. Keystone Canna Remedies opened up in Bethlehem. The store will be selling medical marijuana to patients who have a medical marijuana identification card. Although many people including PA Governor Tom Wolf are happy and excited about the opening, many local residents near the shop are not pleased due to the lack of communication between the residents and the local officials putting up the shop. Officials from the dispensary are hopeful that the local residents will be able to see that it's no different than opening up a pharmacy or a medical practice. The City of Philadelphia has now joined in on the nationwide fight against the opioid epidemic and filed a lawsuit against drug companies that make prescription opioids. Officials say that the company's drugs have created "an unprecedented public health crisis." The lawsuit is trying to stop the deceptive marketing practices used by the companies as well as seeking pay for treatment costs and reimbursement for the money the city has spent responding to opioid related calls. Mayor Jim Kenney stated that the epidemic "has exacted a grim toll" on the city. City officials say that the number of over doses in 2017 reached 1,200 which is one-third more than 2016.
