Suspect Charged in Murder of Penn Student; Women Killed in Bensalem; Police Issue Warning in Mayfair

A suspect has now been charged in the death of a University of Pennsylvania student who was found in a park near his Southern California home last week after going missing. 20-year-old Samuel Lincoln Woodward is charged with the murder of 19-year-old Blaze Bernstein. Bernstein, a sophomore at Penn, was at home in Lake Forest, Orange County for winter break. On the night on January 2nd, Woodward, who was a friend from high school, picked him up and drove to the park. Woodward told investigators that he became angry when Bernstein kissed him. Bernstein's body was discovered a week later on January 9th in a shallow grave. The autopsy determined he had been stabbed over 20 times. Bernstein's parents say this may have been a hate crime. Investigators are looking into that possibility.

A woman was struck and killed this morning while crossing Bristol Pike in Bensalem, Bucks County in snowy conditions. It happened around 5:45 a.m. in the northbound lanes on the 3100 block of Bristol Pike. Bensalem Police say that 30-year-old Catherine Gaffney of Philadelphia was hit by several vehicles after she stepped into the roadway. All of the drivers stopped and are cooperating with police. The road was closed for several hours during the investigation. Anyone that may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact Bensalem police at 215-633-3719.

Frankford and Cottman Avenues in the Mayfair section of Northeast Philadelphia has long been a big celebratory spot following big Philadelphia sports wins. The 2008 Phillies World Series, the Eagles 2005 NFC Championship, and the Flyers Stanley Cups in the 70s drew everyone out into the streets. Philadelphia Police from the 15th District are being proactive to keep everyone safe and still allow fun. A memo went out to all the area businesses urge them to bring in anything outside like signs, flower pots, trash cans and to secure gates and lock up at closing time. They are also urging bar owners to serve drinks in plastic cups and not to sell take out bottles. Police will be enforcing open container laws so don't walk out of the bar with your drink. Temporary no parking signs will go up starting 3pm Sunday to 3am Monday in the area. Business owners should also be sure their surveillance cameras are working and turned on. Police will be out and on patrol. See the letter down below.
