Revel Sold For $200 Million; Fraternity Banned From Pennsylvania; Newark Teen Found Safe

The former Revel Casino in Atlantic City has been sold and the new owner plans to reopen this summer. Colorado developer Bruce Deifik has purchased the shuttered resort from Florida developer Glenn Straub for $200 million. It will now be called the Ocean Resort Casino. The Revel cost $2.4 billion to build and closed in 2014 after only being open for two years and never turning a profit. Straub bought the facility for $82 million in bankruptcy court. Straub struggled to get anything going at the location. He first clashed with ACR Energy Partners, the building's power plant company, who shut off power. He also fought with state officials over a casino license. Straub floated various plans including a water park, a genius academy, and a Syrian refugee camp. The new Ocean Resort Casino will open about the same time as Hard Rock reopens in the former Trump Taj Mahal.

A national fraternity has been banned from Pennsylvania and fined after it was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of a pledge during a hazing ritual in 2013. The Pi Delta Psi fraternity is barred from Pennsylvania for 10 years and must pay a fine of $110,000 for its role in the death of 19-year-old Chun "Michael" Deng. The Baruch College chapter had rented a home in the Poconos in December 2013. Deng, a freshman, was blindfolded, forced to wear a heavy backpack, and then repeatedly tackled while running through a gauntlet in a Crossing Over initiation ceremony. He became unresponsive and eventually was taken to and died at the hospital. 37 people were charged with crimes ranging from aggravated assault to hazing to third-degree murder. The four men facing the most serious charges were also sentenced today. Kenny Kwan, Charles Lai, Raymond Lam and Sheldon Wong previously pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter, hindering apprehension and other charges. Kwan was sentenced to 12 to 24 months in county jail. Lam and Wong were sentenced to 10 to 24 months each. Lai was sentenced to time served. He already spent 342 days in jail after he was unable to make bail. Pi Delta Psi, an Asian-American cultural fraternity founded in 1994, has 25 chapters in 11 states. There is one chapter at Penn State University that will now have to disband.

Newark Police have canceled a Gold Alert from earlier on Monday. 14-year-old Sarah Maness was found in good physical condition after police received a tip from the public. The alert was issued after she was reported missing from Newark High School on Monday morning. Her last known location was at a McDonald's restaurant on the 300 block of East Main Street. No other details were given on where or how she was found.
