New Philly DA Krasner Fires 31 Employees; PA Turnpike Tolls Going Up; Dr. J Fell Ill At Sixers Game

Just days after being sworn in, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner has started making sweeping changes to the office. On Friday, he fired 31 assistant district attorneys, including many veterans and some on homicide cases. Those dismissed today described being called in, told the news, and escorted out with a box of their belongings and without explanation. Krasner, a former defense attorney, has promised to make changes to the office. He hopes to do away with the cash bail system and will not pursue the death penalty.

Statement from the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office:
"DA Larry Krasner has long promised to bring culture change to the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office. This includes a broad reorganization of the structure of the DAO. As part of that process, 31 DAO employees were asked to resign from their positions today, effective immediately.

DA Krasner thanks them for their service to the city. However, he made it clear his intention to take the office in a different direction. Reorganization and a change in some key personnel are necessary to fulfill that promise.

There are nearly 600 people who work at the DAO. DA Krasner has confidence in the ability of our employees to adapt to these changes. That include appropriately handling cases or other matters that are scheduled for the coming weeks.

Change is never easy, but DA Krasner was given a clear mandate from the voters for transformational change. Today's actions are necessary to achieve that agenda. He looks forward to working as a team with the dedicated, talented, and hardworking employees of the DAO to make it the best prosecutorial office in the nation."

The Pennsylvania Turnpike tolls are set to rise this weekend. Beginning Sunday, tolls will go up 6% for both cash and E-ZPass. The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission approved the toll hike back in July. However, there will be no toll increase at the Delaware River Bridge in Bucks County.

Philadelphia 76ers legend Julius "Dr. J" Erving was taken to the hospital on Friday after falling ill at the Sixers game in South Philadelphia. A spokesman for the team said that Dr. J was being evaluated and is expected to be released. The 67-year-old was at the Wells Fargo Center watching the team take on the Detroit Pistons. He rang the ceremonial bell pre-game as the team was highlighting the 35 years since the famous "Rock the Baby" slam dunk over the Lakers' Michael Cooper. The 76ers would go on to win the NBA Championship later on in 1983 vs. the Lakers. As for Friday night's game, Sixers trounced the Pistons 114-78.
