After the 'bomb cyclone' that struck the east coast on Thursday, the City of Philadelphia lifted the snow emergency Thursday night at 8 pm. City officials also announced that the city government offices will be closed on Friday due to the extreme temperatures and the threat of hazardous travel conditions that may arise from the snowfall. Temperatures are expected to be in the single digits to teens over the next few days. City officials stated that the code blue emergency will remain in effect.

The former Governor of New Jersey, Brendan Byrne, who was known as "The Man the Mob Couldn't Buy" has died at the age of 93. Byrne died at his home in Livingston on Thursday. His family stated he suffered from an infection that spread into his lungs. Byrne had a reputation as a no-nonsense prosecutor as well as holding several positions over his 30 years working as a public servant. He was elected for his first term as governor in 1973, beating out Republican state Rep. Charles W. Sandman Jr. His campaign was helped by an FBI surveillance tape that had mobsters discussing how Byrne was too ethical to be bribed. Byrne also signed New Jersey's first income tax laws that permitted gambling in Atlantic City.

Pennsylvania officials announced on Thursday the first go-ahead for a medical marijuana dispensary in the state to open and begin running once the drug becomes available from a licensed grower. The Keystone Canna Remedies dispensary, located in Bethlehem, has received the state's authorization. In total, 9 entities have been approved to grow and process medical marijuana, their products are expected to be available to patients in the coming four months. More that 100,000 people have signed up for the program. Out of those, physicians have approved 1,200 patients and around 570 doctors are being trained to certify patients for medical marijuana use. The law will permit pills, oils, vapor, or liquid marijuana, but not marijuana in the plant or edible form.
