A powerful nor'easter is brewing off the Atlantic Coast and is expected to rapidly intensify overnight Thursday. The technical term for this type of storm growth is 'bombogenesis,' literally like a bomb went off in the atmosphere to create it. Fortunately for most of us in the Philadelphia area, the storm is expected to ride up the coast just far enough out to sea so that we only get a glancing blow of the precipitation. Expect 5-6 inches immediately around the city with up to 6-10" closer to the shore. It will all start early Thursday morning. The larger impact on us all will be the howling winds and dangerous winds chills it leaves behind. Friday and Saturday highs will only reach the teens with lows in the single digits. Winds gusting over 40 mph will keep wind chills well below 0. Any deviation from the current track of the storm will have a big impact on the snow totals as there is a sharp cutoff line. Blizzard Warnings have been put up down the shore, Winter Storm Warnings have been issued for Philadelphia and the I-95 corridor, Winter Weather Advisories are in effect north and west. All warnings start at 9 p.m. Wednesday though 7 p.m. Thursday. For the latest weather information go to: http://www.weather.gov/phi/ and snow totals: http://www.weather.gov/phi/winter

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has ordered Sunoco to stop construction of a natural gas pipeline until it can fix its problems. The Mariner East 2 pipeline is being built to carry propane, butane, and ethane from the Marcellus Shale region to Philadelphia for export. The DEP has already issued dozens of environmental violations to Sunoco. The DEP cited "egregious and willful violations" of state law in their decision to halt operations. The permits will remain suspended until Sunoco can come up with a plan to deal with the permit issues, which have included spills and leaks.

Utility crews are working to repair a gas leak in Burlington, NJ. Gas crews responded to the intersection of Mill and Salem Roads around 12:25 p.m. Wednesday. They discovered a broken 20-inch main. Area residents were evacuated for safety as the workers repair the main. UPDATE: The gas main leak has been contained.
