Code Blue Remains; Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program; PA Firework Law Change

A Code Blue still remains in effect in Philadelphia until further notice. City officials called a Code Blue starting on Christmas Day once the frigid weather started to enter the area. Officials say that homeless outreach teams will be patrolling the streets to invite the homeless in the city to stay indoors at local shelters and homes. City officials are asking the public to call the Homeless Outreach hotline if you see a person who appears to be homeless living outside this week. (215-232-1984).

The Philadelphia Streets Department has now announced the start of its annual Residential Christmas Tree Recycling Program. The program will start on Tuesday January 2nd and will run through Saturday January 13th. Philadelphia residents who wish to drop their trees off to be recycled can take them to the Streets Department Sanitation Convenience Centers. The centers will be open from 8 am to 6 pm Monday through Saturday. The Streets Department says that residents should make sure the trees are free of decorations, any tree with decorations cannot be recycled.

Changes in Pennsylvania's firework policy have now come about, seemingly coinciding with the New Year. PA residents, 18 and above, will be able to buy any firework at a store or a stand that complies with federal law. One of the big changes in the law is that residents will be able to purchase the aerial fireworks such as: rockets, mortars, cakes, candles and crackers that have been illegal for some time now. Previously only out of state residents could purchase the bigger fireworks. The law does not change for the big "display" fireworks. They are still only sold to residents with a permit to use these in a professional show setting.
