Philly Files Federal Lawsuit; Teen Shot/Killed In Germantown; Cold Weather Causes Water Main Breaks

Three cities in the U.S. filed a federal lawsuit on Tuesday against the Department of Defense. Philadelphia, along with New York City and San Francisco, are arguing that many members who are not qualified from gun ownership weren't reported on the FBI's national background check system. The cities filed court papers stating that the military's broken system for dispensing such information was one of the reasons for the massacre in a Texas church that left 26 people dead. Local law enforcement officials rely on the FBI's database to run background checks for gun permit applications as well as monitoring purchases. The lawsuit that was filed in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia seeks an injunction and federal oversight to ensure the Department of Defense keeps up with submitting the records.

Philadelphia Police are now investigating after a teenager was shot and killed in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. The shooting took place on Tuesday on the 5300 block of Greene Street at around 3 pm. Police say that the 18-year-old victim was shot once in the stomach and once in the neck. He was taken to Temple University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Police are still searching for the suspect or suspects responsible.

The recent streak of cold weather in the Delaware Valley has caused some underground damage that affected two water mains. One of them broke in Montgomery County along Germantown Pike and the other in Northeast Philadelphia along Willits Road. Both of the breaks caused a large icy mess that had crews out all day for repairs. Officials say that in the past week there have been at least a half-dozen water main breaks in Philadelphia. City officials expect more water main breaks to occur if the cold weather sticks around.
